I don't think I had a single culminating experience, but one moment I started to actually listen to the lyrics of a rock band I had always liked and encountered a "counter-narrative" for perhaps a first time in an explicit way.

I started to look closely at the language.

I had another experience in a "psychology of women" class I took where the first day the professor said something like "actually this should be called feminist studies class" and also started to describe mindsets out loud - and as explicit content - that I had internalized as part of identifying with my gender.

I was working as a part of food service team in San Francisco. Most of the "Back of House" team were People of Color and were paid less then the "front of house" team who were mostly white.

That's when I started to examine the food system and saw how deeply entrenched it is with racisim. Even the terms back of house and front of house come from the plantations of the deep south and the military kitchen's of the violent colonizing European nations. The way we operate in modern day kitchens was formed to feed the soldiers that went to Africa and stole people, brought them here to work for free while stealing the land from Native People.

Also same job, different Tech company. I was a part of a three person team, 2 server/hosts and 1 porter (ie dishwasher) Us two servers each made 3 more dollars/hour then the porter. We organized and asked out bosses if they would redistribute our wages, effectively lowering our wages and increasing the porter's wages.

The servers were white skinned (me) and brown skinned, both young, able bodied. The porter was an elderly black man, recovering addict, who in the end was tokenized as one of the only black employees by the hiring team and eventually was let go when the executive team could not support the needs of this individual (that's a whole another story where this company profited off the back of a black person, making themselves "look good" while not actually changing themselves or the system that oppressed him. )

They denied our request to equalize our wages, stating that if we left "they wouldn't be able to justify the equal wage because servers are used to being paid more then porters, it's an industry standard."

I was involved in a group protesting against the US invasion of Iraq in 2003. During that time there was a movement to get city councils to pass resolutions against the impending war and the we were doing this in my hometown. Maybe this was the first city council meeting I ever attended. During the meeting there were a group of black residents who complained about how difficult it was to get police services in their part of town, even when acts of violence would happen. This really struck me because I realized there was

I went to an anti-racism training for community organizers about 10 years ago (actually where I met my now husband!), and it shifted the way that I understood the term "racism." It made me realize that I was implicated because I had benefitted from a system the promotes white supremacy. It now feels so obvious, but at the time, I felt like I had been a "white ally" who had taken critical race theory classes in college, and therefore wasn't racist. It woke me up to realize that simply by benefitting from a racist system, I am implicated as racist, unless I am actively doing anti-racist work.

I was working at a high needs school as an admin and deeply believed that if only the people working worked better, smarter, longer, we could make change for our students and the community. I worked myself hard and others around my equally hard. The gains we made were minimal and often easily turned back. I found myself having to fight all the time for things that I knew were easily gained at other schools, schools not so black and brown. I was seen as a angry and whiny. I was exhausted and burned out and saw myself as a failure. It took leaving and bottoming out for me to realize that we, the teachers and admin, were part of a system designed to failure; we could not work our way out of it.
