Background information: Students who have an Emotional or Behavioral Disorder show an inability to learn that can not be explained by intellectual, sensory, or health factors. Students may also express inappropriate types of behavior or feelings under normal circumstances.
Liam: Liam has a lot of difficulties in school.

The first short-term goal Liam and I set for him was to be able to "sit still" in his Science class. With this goal he was expected to try and sit still, as best as he could, and pay close attention to what the teachers was teaching.
Liam and I's second goal is to have him sit still in his Math class and continues to slowly help him sit still and pay attention in every class.

Our long-term goal was to see a decrease in behavior slips and an increase in grades. We also hope to see improvements in Liam's ability to do his homework and have it be a less difficult task.

With Liam's behavior, we decided to make it a goal that he would not talk to his friends when the teacher was teaching or when he or someone else was learning. This helped Liam to not be disruptive and it kept him from getting into unnecessary trouble.
We also agreed on a second goal which was to have him focus on his breathing when he gets overwhelmed or mad so that he would not have an outburst whether he was at home or school.

An activity goal we agreed on was he wanted him to only focus on soccer when he was at at soccer practice or a game. This goal will help him to be able to fully enjoy soccer and not have the stress of the day follow him to practice. This goal will also help him to be less aggressive at soccer practice if he is not already angry about something else.

-Helping Liam to do as many hands on activities as possible would help his learning tremendously.
-Having one on one conversations with Liam once or twice a week to let him know he is important would help to motivate him to do better.
-Having conversations that are sometimes not related to school. For example a conversation about soccer or what he did over the weekend would give him a good brain break.
-Allowing him time here and there to get his energy out by talking to his fellow classmates or being able to run a lap would help keep his focus on what he is learning rather than having his brain wander constantly.

-Moving him away from his friends would give him a better chance to focus on what he is learning and not be worried about what his friends are doing or wondering if they wanted to talk.
- Having student discussions during lessons would help to allow him to share his ideas on a subject rather than saying them while the teacher is talking to his friends.
-Sitting Liam by a student who is friendly and will help Liam, but not a friend could help him feel comfortable with where he is sitting but not feel like he needs to talk all the time.
-Group activities would also help Liam to get some energy out and talk to his fellow classmates rather than always having to listen to the teacher.

Math: Allow student to use a whiteboard instead of a piece of paper so that way he can freely make mistakes and have a different, more fun way of doing math problems.
Language Arts: Allow student to read at their own pace and what they want to read. Instead of the teacher choosing a book, let the student choose a book that interests them that fits the certain topic or genre needed. Allow student to do their own book report, whether that is a written summary of the book or a project.
Social Studies: Show videos of historical events or people the class is learning about to allow the student to picture the event or person and have something to think back on.
Science: EXPERIMENTS, EXPERIMENTS, EXPERIMENTS! Incorporate fun, easy experiments that relate to the what the student is learning and will easily grab their attention. Starting the lesson with an experiment will help capture the student attention and give the student a visual to look back on.

-Give student a study guide to help ensure learning is happening and go over the study guide either one on one or as a class to answer any questions the students may have.
-Go over testing strategies with student such as deep breaths, beneficial studying habits, and what to do if the student does not know how to do a problem. This way, instead of Liam getting frustrated, he will be able to handle his emotions and do the best he can on his own.
-Alternative learning assignments. Allowing student to not always take a test, allowing him to do alternative assignments such as a book report or a speech would give him something to look forward to and uses his strengths to his advantage.
-Not using the words "test" or "quiz". Use the words "practice" or "final assignment" to take off the hidden pressures of the words associated with "test' and "quiz".
