Our chosen stimulus for this week was based around nightmares, or night terrors. The genre we used for this was metal, and we used screamed vocals in order to make the song unsettling and angry, in order to mimic a nightmare. We used two electric guitars, a bass guitar, and a flute to give a higher, uncomfortable feel along with the heavier played instruments and vocals.

The development

We worked from the chords that had already been decided prior to the rehearsal. So to develop the piece, we had to incorporate the other instruments into the structure. This included the bass and flute playing the same notes and deciding where the flute came in. This was in order to not mess up the vocals with the higher pitch of the flute, but to fit into the structure and make the piece change between dark and heavy to more a more unsettling tone.

The lyrics had also been written before the rehearsal by Carl. The lyrics were tailored to suit the overall theme of the stimulus and to fit the chords. The lyrics are about how a nightmare won't end and you can't wake up from it, such as sleep paralysis almost. However it also brings in the theme of these thoughts and images coming from within yourself, and what might be causing them. Similarly, sleepwalking is a factor in the theme of the lyrics too. A feature developed in the lyrics is the use of "rest easy, for you'll not for long" being spoken from the perspective of the night terror itself. This change creates a sense of darker themes in the song through the lyrics, which strengthens the original idea of the stimulus and the unsettling vibe.

The performance

Our performance starts with the bass guitar and the flute playing the root notes of the chords drawn out, followed by one of the guitars playing the riff. The first verse begins when the vocals are introduced, and these instruments keep playing until the guitar drops out for a bar and then comes back in at the pre-chorus. For this one bar, only the bass and the flute are playing their root notes. The guitar then comes in to build up to the chorus, with the bass playing root notes to suit the part of the riff the guitar is playing. After the chorus in the second verse, the notes revert back to mimic that of the first verse and the flute is reintroduced to the song. The tempo of the song slows again here to differentiate the parts of the song's structure. The chorus repeats again after this. Next, as the bass guitar and the flute play the original root notes, the guitar goes into a solo that lasts for around 24 bars, the first 16 being fastest in tempo as the notes of the chorus are held in the lyrics. This then has a diminuendo into an outro of the song where the final part of the lyrics are sung at a quieter dynamic, and the bass and flute drop out of the song. It ends on the held notes of the vocals.

Prior to our performance, we decided our song was a metal piece about nightmares, and the simultaneous control and lack of control we have over them. I believe we gave a successful response to our chosen stimulus through the performance, and that we succeeded in bringing across the darker tones in the song. Especially through the lyrics and heavy instruments, as well as using the flute to make the song unsettling to listen to. Consequently I would say the strengths of our song were the arrangement of the instruments in regards to structure, and the vocals as the focus of the song.

After the performance, our peers gave us nothing to improve on. But, I personally believe the song could have been improved by developing the rhythm section, for instance adding drums to the piece to make it even heavier. I feel this would make the song even more effective in what we for aiming for with the stimulus.

Regarding my own strengths, I think the use of legato in the notes I played helped give the song a mysterious, darker tone. However to improve I would have liked to have played something more complicated than the root notes of the riff if we had more time to do so. For instance matching the heavier parts played by the guitar by playing a faster part on the bass to help make the song heavier.

Overall, I think that our song was successful as a response to the stimulus we chose. However, we could have improved on a few things to make the piece even stronger such as the rhythm section and making the song even heavier to suit that of the heavy, screamed vocals.
