Activity: Arctic Winter Sensory Bin

This sensory bin activity works well with babies and toddlers. It is filled with soft snow and Arctic animals to show what the Arctic winter season is like. In the Arctic, snow covers the ground for a long time and the weather stays very cold.

As babies and toddlers touch, scoop and move the animals through the snow, they explore different textures and use their hands and fingers. This activity supports sensory explorations early motor skills and helps children begin to understand Arctic animals.

One way I can share vocabulary with babies and toddlers is talking to them during play. As they touch the snow I can gently say it like “ Snow is cold”. So they will understand that snow is always come in winter time. I can also names the animals in both English and Inuktitut, like saying polar bear or nanuk and caribou or tuktu and many more. Using local language during play helps children hear familiar words, make connections and better understand what they are learning in a natural and meaningful way.

Vanissa

-My activity is home made bubble solution, it would work with both babies and toddlers, you can have both babies and toddlers help you mix in the ingredients and have the children make their own stick to blow bubbles with made out of pipe cleaners and beads for decoration. Our children had a lot of fun doing this activity, they enjoyed being a part of making the solution and it kept them busy for a while.

-one way I can share vocabulary with the children is telling the children the name of the ingredients, asking questions and asking them to tell me when they have ever played or used bubbles with their families.

~Caryn

RAINBOW PAINTING (CREATIVE ARTS)

This activity is really good for learning and remembering colours for toddlers.Rainbow is also one of the drawing kids are very interested to learn first and painting it is more exciting. Kids love colours ,when I said let’s paint a rainbow they are all very excited. I showed them the picture and ask them to tell me the colours of the rainbow. Some got it right.During the activity they tried to follow the sequence of colours even though the arch is not perfect but they got it. One kid ask me what colour next. I guided few of them. When the time come that we are almost done, they feel a little bit silly and mixed the colours.I let them do it because for me what matter most is they learn and have fun.

For them to develop their vocabulary ,I will guide them and ask them questions about their favourite colour in the rainbow. I will listen to them and engage and be attentive to what they ask and say to develop their language development.

-Mila
