However, these languages are not on the DESE list so they aren't being reported in the SIMS count. I can't run a report from Aspen to show who the students are and they are defaulting to "Spanish." These languages include: Mam, Quiche, and Q'eqchi'. Can these be coded in SIMS? We need to support these students and not erase their first languages.</p>]]></description>

Is it correct to assume that if we discover this information we must classify the student as an EL, even if the family made it clear on their form that English is the primary language for the student?  How will that reflect on our district if it's not discovered until later and there are a few years where the student did not take ACCESS but also had not achieved exit scores in their previous district?</p>]]></description>
