Pearl is named after a white object which symbolises that children are always born innocent no matter who their parents or relatives are. Throughout the book, Hester wears gray which shows her sadness by being pushed away from society and the one she loves and wears black which shows society the sin that she committed. Chillingworth and Dimmesdale both wear black which shows Dimmesdale as being a sinner and Chillingworth as being evil. Green symbolises diferent aspects of nature throughout the novel. Gold represents luxuriance and goodness which helps readers understand that while Hester sinned, she is still a good person. Color is used throughout the story as a way to express the character's emotions. Color also shows how each of the characters are perceived by others at one point or throughout the entire story.

"I have sought, I say, to persuade this godly youth, that he should deal with you, here in the face of heaven, and before these wise and upright rulers, and in hearing of all the people, as toughing the vileness and blackness of your sin." (Chapter 3, pg. 63)
This quote starts to get the readers recognized with the belief that black is associated with sin. Dimmesdale calling sin black brings the readers to that realization on their own.

" Not more by its hue than by some indescribable peculiarity in its fashion, it had the effect of making her fade personally out of sight and outline; while, again, the scarlet letter brought her back from this twilight indistinctness and revealed her under the moral aspect of its own illumination." (Chapter 21. pg. 222)
This quote shows how Hester is seen with her wardrobe. Hester wearing gray makes her disappear from sight like a silhouette that's just there in the background but the Scarlet A makes her visible to everyone because of its radiance of its color.

The author of the article was mainly talking about the difference between the romantics vision and the traditionalist vision in "The Scarlet Letter". The author does at one point though, talk about the forest and why the color green is important to the novel. The color green represents life and nature which is a big recurring theme in the novel.
