The Aswarm with the Spirits of All Ages Here exhibit was very interesting and worthwhile. A piece in particular that stuck out to me was the sculpture of boy made of wood who sat on a chair. The audio recording explained that the boy had no face, which represented his freedom that was taken away from him. The boy was also bent over on the chair which was explained that it was showing him in distress and thinking of what he was going to do.

The Aswarm with the Spirits of All Ages Here was an informational exhibit that thoroughly explained the history of slavery. The piece of artwork that stood out was the mannequins tied up on a boat because it was cruel punishment. They were limited to space and freedom and this demonstrates the overall lack of privileges slaves had. Also, there was an image of a slave with a mouth mask in order to stop the slaves from spitting and chained necks to prevent escapes. This made me realize how much freedom we have now and how we need to cherish it.

The "Aswarm with the Spirits of All Ages Here" was a great exhibit that accurately explained slavery in the United States and the effects it created. The speaker did a wonderful job in telling the story of slavery in an unbiased way that showed the viewpoints of the slaves as well as the enslavers. Additionally, she was able to describe how slavery was a different experience for every slave involved by reading the personal narratives of slaves. It is great that we still honor those who were taken as victims to slavery even though it is in our nation's past, so that we can never forget the immoral actions that were done to them and try to make it better.

It is nice to learn outside the textbook by visiting museums that bring this part of history alive. The audio of the artist allowed me to really understand each piece of artwork and why the artist portrayed that piece in that specific way. I really enjoyed visiting the museum.

I think the most interesting part of the exhibit, to me at least, was being able to actually see the physical objects from back then. For example, it was really eye-opening to see how slaves were literally packed into small spaces to be transported. It was also really interesting to look at the paintings of slaves, because you could almost read their expressions, which is something which I have never been exposed to before. All-in-all, the exhibit helped me understand the past and appreciate what we have today.

I found this exhibit really neat. I thought the way it was set up and the way you learned was very personal and made the experience better. To hear about the artwork from the actual artists and hearing their voice, rather than reading a text or listening to a tour guide helped me engage more and enjoy it better. The discussion following our time to explore was also very neat and further improved my knowledge on this topic.

I thought it was really cool how the artist put up many letters and journal entries over a whole wall because it was interesting to look at these primary documents that I may not have been able to see if it wasn't for this trip. Also, I learned a lot during the discussion, especially about how different each experience was for slaves. For example, the difference in reading and writing between slaves was drastic, and just the treatment they were given varied in each place.

I thought that the Aswarm exhibit was a unique way to show the various hardships that slaves faced through various mediums. The recreation of a slave ship clearly depicted how inhumane the conditions were and made me realize the comfortable life we all enjoy. Many of the more abstract pieces, like the canoe also illustrated other hardships and perspectives of the slaves - as explained through the audio. I think the discussion really helped tie it all together and explain the significance of many of the pieces. It was a really awesome/interactive way to summarize a lot of the learning that we've done this year.

The most impactful thing I've learned this year in my Civil War class has been how far a group of people will go to protect the ideals they believe in and their way of life. This connects to the Nullification Crisis in 1832 when Andrew Jackson was president. This event was caused by tension from sectionalism between the North and the South when the South felt underrepresented and that they were being treated unfairly. President Jackson had to solve this problem or else South Carolina threated to secede the Union. 30 years later, South Carolina did secede for the same reasons they threated to secede in 1832 but this time President Lincoln had to attempt to control the situation. Both predicaments came from increased sectionalism and tension between the North and South except the start of the Civil War came from a much greater amount of tension showing that it had been growing for those 30 years. President Jackson (with the help of Henry Clay) was able to quell the angers of the South because they were not past the breaking point but the build up of tension over time became too much and when the first shot was taken at Fort Sumter all that tension broke and the Civil War was started. From start to finish, the South was attempting to protect who they were, just like in 1832.

The most impactful aspect of the exhibit for me was the structure of slave quarters in transportation ship as it was an extremely realistic portrayal of the terrible conditions upon the ship as slaves were packed together and chained down. This exhibit gave me a new understanding of the overall slave experience and how dehumanized the slaves were throughout the entire experience.

I thought that the Aswarm exhibit provided me with a new prespective on the horrors of slavery. The piece depicting the slaves on the slave ships helped me to better understand just how bad the conditions were on those ships, and the depiction of the slave with the collar in the center really helped to encapsulate the true horror of slavery. I also appreciated the lack of faces on many of the slaves as a symbol of dehumanization, and I also liked how the audio supplement had more emotion and was more compelling than a traditional text panel. Overall, I appreciated it as another way to learn about the true horrors of slavery.

I really enjoyed the exhibit. The most interesting part, in my opinion, was the room papered with transcripts of interviews with former slaves. There were so many fascinating aspects of those interviews: the way the context impacted the content, the impossible ages that the interviewees provided, the usage of written dialect (and particularly the way that one of the interviews had been marked up in order to correct "mistakes" where the dialect had not been written out). Additionally, having the voice of the artist herself as a guide helped to make the work more authentic and powerful.

The artist presents the actual lived history in a unique perspective that people can feel the despair slaves suffered at that time. Life of enslaved people, justification from oppressors, as well as the mixture of sadness and bitterness in this exhibition revealed the true story of slavery. It helps me to realize that individual experiences also count and the pain is real. I really appreciate this.

I thought the exhibit was able to coney its message so powerfully because it engaged different senses, apart from the visual art, the audio did and amazing job at providing some background as well as the perspective of the artist herself. It also allowed the viewer to interact with the artwork, like in the ship used to transport slaves, the artist encourages you to step into the provided space to understand how small the space was and how uncomfortable it must have been for them. It allows you to place your self in their shoes, in a way.

For me, this exhibit showed me a more accurate view of what it was like to be a slave. The exhibit was filled with primary sources from people who experienced slavery firsthand, and it really helped me better understand the history of the US. I feel like the exhibit gave me a unique experience that I would never be able to get in a traditional classroom setting.

I found that the exhibit humanized slaves and made it apparent that the figures we have been reading about in class are real people who went through awful expiriences. The exhibit also showcased how slavery has affected people even after its end.

I felt that the exhibit did an amazing job at applying personal experiences and feelings to the story of slavery that we are normally taught, which is rather impersonal. By gaining insight into the thoughts and feelings of the individuals who experienced the different aspects of the middle passage and chattel slavery I was able to really understand the criminal and dehumanizing nature of the system of slavery in America

feel this exhibit was very interesting and caught the expirience of slaves in a very eye-catcging way that in detail gave a real and harsh depiction of the life of a slave and the cruelty that African Americans had to endure. This exhibit is not like any other-- and captured the unknown truths that fall between the cracks and don't make it to history, which are things we all need to be more aware of.

The exhibit was exciting to see, mostly because of the art. Not a lot of things are made in the remembrance and education of slavery, usually books like novels or even movies, but never really physical/hands-on art. I think mostly because it’s a past that is liked to be forgotten by many Americans, so the subject may seem dull or unimportant to many. This exhibit shows that not only is slavery not forgotten, but embraced and turned into things like art and stories to show the resilience, determination, faith, and unity, etc. of African Americans and the people who fight and stand with them. Although I knew and read most of the information in the museum, it was exciting to see correlating artwork and hear the descriptions on my phone rather than read a text or learn the information by itself.
