         <description><![CDATA[<div>From the session today I have learned that writing can be used as a tool to build knowledge, although it is something I knew from experience, it was interesting to see practical examples of how to teach writing to students in an exciting (and for me) new way. Justine made a wonderful point about students being able to transfer their skills to their personal lives; it's a great way to learn and a great way to motivate students because not everyone loves to write but it gives students the opportunity to connect their writing skills to something personal. If I may borrow Justine's analogy, writing is like learning to play the piano or learning to play tennis, you have to start from the bottom and move your way up. You won't be able to hit an ace without learning to hit the ball first. Looking forward to the upcoming workshop. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Gots- The most impressive words&nbsp; for me&nbsp; is that reading as a writer.&nbsp; I think of being as a writer, the most important&nbsp; factor is that students need&nbsp; to have very basic and&nbsp; solid foundation&nbsp; of&nbsp; phonics,&nbsp; phonemic awareness, fluency and sentence level.&nbsp; The more words students master, the easier they&nbsp; do a lot of&nbsp; reading which can enhance their wrting.When students master the skill of decoding words and spelling , they can express their ideas and minds&nbsp; freely on paper.&nbsp; Now&nbsp; I’m teaching G2 students who aren’t native speakers and I'm spending most time on drilling their phonics and spelling.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Outcome: By the end of the this writers' workshop, students will be able to write a descriptive paragraph about their favorite season.<br><br>Introduction: We Do<br>I introduce the concept of descriptive writing to students by sharing&nbsp; mentor examples of descriptive paragraphs from an online source. I Explained that descriptive writing uses sensory details to help the reader imagine what something looks, feels, smells, tastes, or sounds like.<br><br>We Do:&nbsp;<br>Guide students through a brainstorming activity where they think about their favorite season. I encouraged them to use all five senses to describe the season in detail. For example, if their favorite season is summer, they might describe the place they love to play or the sound of children playing, the, the taste of ice cream from the nearby vendor, and the sight of colorful flowers in the garden.<br><br>I then taught students how to organize their ideas into a paragraph with a clear topic sentence, some supporting details, and a concluding sentence. I modeled this process by writing a paragraph about my own favorite season.<br><br>Finally, I provided time for students to write their own descriptive paragraphs about their favorite season. We then circulated around the room to provide support and feedback as needed.<br><br>The conclusion<br>i asked students to share their paragraphs with the class. I then encouraged classmates to guess which season each student is describing based on their sensory details. We then Celebratde the students' hard work and progress in descriptive writing!&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>2nd Grade Writers Workshop</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Goal:</strong> At the end of the writer's workshop the second graders will be able to write a narrative story with story elements:(character, setting, problem, resolution) and use transition words to create a good flow of the story. <br><br><strong>Introduction:</strong><br>I introduce the concept first by asking the students what they see in the picture and how the words relate to it so they can get an idea and imagination on what the story will look like. Then, I introduced what narrative writing is and what it looks like by giving them an example from an online source. Then, I asked them what are the elements that we can see in narrative texts. We then discussed the elements of a story: characters, setting, problem and resolution by answering Who, Where, What, When and How questions. <br><br><strong>Brainstorming Part (Day 1)</strong><br>The students started to brainstorm and discuss with their partners about making a story using the words in the word bank. Then they wrote their ideas on their whiteboards. Then, I asked three groups to share their story with the class. Last, I asked the students to give ideas and we created a story as a whole class! Everyone shared and gave amazing ideas. <br><br>To practice what they learned, I gave them a similar activity to their homework.<br><br><strong>&nbsp;Continuation</strong> <strong>(Application: Day 2)<br></strong>On the second day of the workshop, we reviewed the elements of a story and gave another example to them. I asked them to read a sample story without good transition words. Then, we learned about story sequence puts things in order. The students learned the keywords First, Next, Then, and Last, and then I told them to write the keywords on their whiteboards. I then showed them another picture to spark their curiosity. The students identified the elements of the story after brainstorming.&nbsp;<br><br>Last, all of them wrote their story with transition words on their whiteboard. Then, 4 students shared their stories to the class. Once they finished sharing, they transferred their writing onto a lined paper</div>]]></description>

         <title>Grade 1: Opinion writing We Do Lesson </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Expectations: During this week's UOI we explored interesting facts about certain animals and how their body functions differently depending on the animal and their environment (land, water and air). I only see my students 2/3 times a week and I only teach the UOI at this point so finding time for a writer's workshop usually comes at the end or midway through a unit. The students from my building (their language of instruction is Chinese) have only just started writing full sentences without just copying from the teacher so this WE DO lesson was more about sentence building, understanding the grammar in Chinese and English, and being able to read/understand what they wrote.<br><br>Outcome: The students practiced "opinion writing" beforehand and during each and every lesson whilst learning about all the body parts. They were able to write a short descriptive story/paragraph about their chosen animal. One of the ways to motivate my students (the majority of them have only been studying English for 7/8 months) is to ask them to draw a picture and then write about it using words or sentences that we've learned prior to the actual writing activity. I'm very proud of the grade 1's because after we finished I asked them to present their work and read it to the class. They were very happy and proud of themselves too because I used less scaffolding in this lesson; they felt like they achieved their goal - writing properly, using correct grammar, and most importantly understanding what they wrote.&nbsp;<br><br>WE DO lesson specifics -&nbsp;<br><br>I do - I taught them opinion writing during our previous classes "I like the ... because it is...", so we started with this sentence as an opening line. The children chose their own adjectives.&nbsp;<br><br>We do - I asked the students what they know about this animal in terms of body parts. We learned the meaning and structure "It has ... to ...". Most of the students struggle with spelling big words for example "breathe" so we helped them with that but they could write the sentence patterns on their own (*we practiced a lot).<br><br>You both do: We used small whiteboard sheets to practice writing our sentences neatly and within the margins (some students struggle with their handwriting so they enjoy using whiteboards to practice because they can quickly fix their mistakes).&nbsp;<br><br>You do: In the second mini-lesson, we watched a short video about a story of a baby shark growing up as a tune-in lesson. I then asked the students how would they like to end their paragraph; most of them responded with "I like it very much. I like it a lot. It is very cool. It can swim very fast." <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In our current UOI, students are learning about different energy sources, renewable and nonrenewable energy, and sustainability.&nbsp;<br><br>I started with a mentor text I obtained online titled, Should Snakes Be Pets? From that text, I outline for the student the topic sentence, three main reasons why not to have it as a pet, supporting details to support reasons, and the conclusion paragraph that reintroduces the topic sentence.&nbsp;<br><br>I asked the students to write an opinion piece on what they think is the most reliable and efficient energy source. Students brainstormed and took notes on a graphic organizer I had printed. I then asked the students to write a rough draft using their completed graphic organizers.<br><br>In the next step, I had the students rewrite their drafts on lined paper and delete any unnecessary information that didn't support their reasons.&nbsp;<br><br>I then used the exact mentor text to model the transition words used throughout the text. After they had completed the final written draft, I had the students type their papers using transition words from a list I had oriented and given to them.<br><br>In the next class, students brought in their typed papers and were assigned to groups of five. I modeled giving feedback using one student's work and used an opinion writing checklist to evaluate the student's work. After demonstrating for 20 minutes, I asked students to peer-review five other students' work in their respective groups. Once this was completed for all students, I had enough time in the class to hand students back their papers. They read them and got immediate feedback on how to improve their papers.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
