In this story, there's a lot of hardship, friendship, etc. But the true theme is that you must accept your true self, to truly be happy.

At first, Charlie doesn't like how he isn't as smart as other people. He has wanted to be smarter his whole life. Charlie would even take night classes to try and improve his knowledge, but he still gets nowhere. 

He then gets offered a way to maybe get smarter by 2 elder doctors, and he accepts. He then has to perform 2 different tests before the operation takes place. He first has to take multiple, different inkblot tests, that he struggles with. He then meets the white mouse Algernon, that has already been tested on.  Algernon beats Charlie multiple times, and Charlie starts to feel lower about himself.
