Various places in the city of Naples are linked to the mystery. One among them is Castel Nuovo, also known as MASCHIO ANGIOINO. One of these legends is linked to King Angioinus. He had two prisons in the underground: the "baron conspiracy prison" and the "millet pit" that was originally used as a grain store. But the latter, with the passage of time, it was used to capture the prisoners, among others also the philosopher Thomas Campanella. In one of these prisons , there was a hidden crocodile, that killed the prisoners. So the prisoners disappered.
According to the legend the Queen giovanna II took the crocodile from Egypt into the castle.
Probably the Queen used these prisons and the animal to kill her lovers.

The construction of its old nucleus is by the initiative of Charles I of Anjou. With the rise of the thone of Roberto il Saggio, in 1309, the castle was restored and enlarged, and it became a remarkable center of culture thanks to his passion for arts and letters. In 1443, under the dinasty of Aragonese, a famous triumphal arch was added to the main gate, to celebrate the arrival of the king Alfonso d'Aragona.
