This image is of the underside of a cherry blossom tree. Initially, when one looks at the picture they see a plant, branches, and flowers and they are meant to feel happy. Plants blooming and growing are often used as a symbol for life or hope. From this angle, one has a lot better view of the branches of the tree. The branches are meant to represent people’s paths and how most people start out their life similarly but as we grow older we tend to turn onto different paths and make our own choices. This is shown in the branches as they get thinner and thinner the more times they split. I wanted to capture the branches especially in this image so when taking my photo I made sure to get the angle from under the tree. The flowers are meant to evoke the feeling of hope or joy. These flowers are showing that one can find joy even when their choices are far from the decisions that most others are making. I specifically chose to take this photo at a time where there was no sun and the sky was grey to further advance the feeling of hope found in the cherry blossoms because it demonstrates that good things can still be found even if not everything is turning out the way one wanted around them. This photo incorporates imagism because it is simply a photo so a distinct image has been created and the photo also incorporates one’s emotions. The viewer is meant to feel a sort of reassurance when looking at this photo as they see the bright colored cherry blossoms against the gray sky.

This poem uses imagism to create the picture of a child who loses their ballon on the way home from a carnival. All of the emotions one experiences or attributes to the poem are derived from the image the words create. The image created shows a kid who let go of their balloon that they had just won at the carnival and tearing up as they watch it disappear into the distance. Greasy foods are often eaten at carnival leaving the child’s hands slippery and causing them to accidentally let go of their balloon on the way home. The grey clouds add to the sadness that the child is experiencing. The balloon is gold because the color makes it look like a light as it disappears into the distance symbolizing lost hope. The boy is watching all of his hopes disappear and he is left to an incoming storm leaving the reader to feel this sense of loss and sadness that the child is experiencing. This poem is written in imagist fashion as it does not use any words that do not directly contribute to the image created by the poem.

This audio is a clip of many-layered sounds that I recorded while I was on my trip to Japan. Together these sounds create the image of someone late for work trying to make their commute in a busy train station. Many anxious people trying to get where they want to go, a lot of quick and frantic movement. I took certain sounds and edited them to make them sound like different noises that come together to form one single moment. For example, I took the sound of someone talking and sped it up enough to make it sound like a train speeding past. This adds a frantic feeling to the image. You hear the sounds of people walking and talking which adds the feeling of chaos. All of these clips were also very speed up to give off the feeling that whoever is in the station experiencing this moment is very late and their brain is rushing at a million miles an hour while their heart pounds. This is an imagist piece of art because it paints a very clear picture in one’s head in is able to put them right there in the moment where they would be experiencing these emotions.

Unlike romanticism, Imagism is a form of poetry that does not use any sort of the flowery language (A Brief guide). Imagist poetry seeks to be as short and concise as possible. The poems are meant to create visual images and incorporate the senses using concrete details and no unnecessary words (A Brief guide). The first imagist ideas date back to 1908 and T. E. Hulme, while Ezra Pound who was noted as the father of imagism did not start to write poems in this fashion until a few years after (A Brief guide). Imagist poems talk directly about the subject, stick to a musical phrase when it comes to the tempo and use no words that do not directly contribute (A Brief guide). These are the three rules to imagist poetry as defined by F.S. Flint and Ezra Pound (A Brief guide). In this collection, one will see three pieces of work, all different types that I have created in line with the core guidelines for imagist poets. I have created art that brings a single image to mind and that image is what makes the reader feel emotion. After my three original pieces, I have displayed the poem “Oread”, which is by the American imagist H.D. along with my personal interpertation of the poem.

The author uses very clear and sharp language to get her point across as well as choosing words to the reader feels like they are in the moment. Both of these points help contribute to the imagism of the poem. This poem is spoken all in command from the oread which I believe is a sort of mountain nymph. This seems to be a display of Oread’s power along with talking about the land as if it is owned by the mountain nymphs. This nymph seems to feel the need to show its power and ownership. I envision this oread casting a spell almost and it seems almost evil. The storm and destruction that will ensure help contribute to this evil or ominous feeling. The poem definitely evokes more than one sense as it paints a clear picture in one’s mind as they envision a stormy sea as well as using such language that the reader can almost smell the pine trees.
