Caroline Chisholm was a progressive 19th-century reformer. She dedicated her life to philanthropist work, however, she is particularly known for her involvement in female immigrant welfare in Australia. This is one of the several reasons why she is considered one of the most successful pioneers.

Caroline Chisholm was born near Northampton England on the 30th of May 1808 and died on the 25th of March 1877. She was born into a large wealthy family who were devoted to living out their faith and Christian practices. She had a good childhood and was educated by one of the governors in the family home. From a young age, she was taught to be responsible to others which has influenced her to engage in her charitable works. She was encouraged to pursue her dreams by her parents and to uphold many of their religious beliefs and values. She was the daughter to William Jones a pig farmer and her mother also named Caroline attended to the needs of their large family. She was christened into the church at a young age and later on in life became a Catholic (1831) after marrying Archibald Chisholm who worked as an officer in the East India country.

After living in England for two years she and her husband moved to Mardas India. It was here where she was convinced that God was calling her to help those who are less fortunate. In 1832 she founded her first school for the daughters of European soldiers. From then she began a long line of social work that assisted in improving the lives of others. She followed the call of God and settled in Sydney Australia in September 1838. During the years 1841 to 1844 Caroline’s work assisted over 14,000 people. Caroline was a determined woman with a kind heart. The love that she had for her neighbours motivated her to respond to God's call and act upon it.

She recognised the needs of the poor and homeless immigrants and therefore started female immigrants home in 1841. In 1845, both Archibald and Caroline Chisholm left Australia to return to England. This is where she launched a committee and advocated better safety and health facilities aboard immigrate ships. After hearing about the poor conditions in the 1854 Victoria Gold Rushes they made their way back to Australia. She worked in the gold fields by setting up shelter sheds on long roads to and from towns. Her worked ended in Australia when she fell ill, she made the trip back to England satisfied that much of her work had come to a pass. She continued to live a happy life until the time of her death where she was buried near Northampton at the age of 68.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan - Luke 10:25-37
On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
“What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’”
“You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

In reply, Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

“Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

World Behind the Text
The country of Israel at the time when the parable was set looked bare, dry, rocky and was covered in many sandy mountains. It was surrounded by the Mediterranean sea, The dead sea, Sea of Galilee, Jordan river Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. The good Samaritan was set on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho which was notorious for danger. To give the parable more context we need to look at what was happening in this community at the time. This road was known as the “Way of Blood” because of the blood often on the ground after someone had just been beaten. Due to the isolated terrain, desert-like climate and tall mountains on both sides of the path people were easy targets. Bandits would find hiding places and find escape routes through the desert where no one would pursue them. The path from Jerusalem to Jericho was one of the main paths of ancient Palestine. Many people travelled on it including armies merchants and pilgrims. Due to the area being extremely secluded and robberies occurring often it was reasonable to believe that neither the Priest nor the Levite stopped to help the injured man. At the time when this parable was set Jews and Samaritans despised of each other, they came from different religions and did not usually associate with each other. During this time the temples where both the priest and Levite preach had several rules regarding being clean and unclean. In biblical times you were considered unclean if you were to touch someone dead or bloody. This, therefore, explains why the priest may not have stopped to help the man as he may have thought he was dead. As the Levite also worked in the temples he also may have avoided the man as he did not want to face the consequences of being unclean. By having this further information we are able to gather a deeper understanding of the parable. Although Jews and Samaritans despised of each other the Samaritan still stopped to care for the man. Also knowing this information we can gather the understanding that neither the priest nor the Levite are bad people they were just protecting their jobs within the church and protecting themselves.

World of the Text
The message behind this parable is to “love your neighbour as yourself”. This message was displayed through the parable “The Good Samaritan” and is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke. The parable begins with a Jew walking from Jerusalem to Jericho when he came across some robbers. They stripped him of clothing, beat him up and left him to die on the side of the road. This is where we were introduced to a priest and Levite, failing to show any love towards the man they both crossed the road to avoid the injured Jew. However, when the main character the “Good Samaritan” came across the man he stopped to help him. He cared for him on the side of the road before carrying him to the nearest shelter. Here is where he paid for someone to look after him until he could regain his health. He told the man looking after the Jew that if it costed more to look after him he would reimburse him when he returned. The good Samaritan did not care about the race of the injured man instead he saw someone who was injured and stopped to help him which displays the love he had for others. This story is told to answer the question “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus displayed the message that to inherit eternal life you must show compassion towards everyone and love your neighbour just like the good Samaritan did in this story. By telling us to “Go and do likewise.” he wants us to apply this to our everyday life and show compassion towards everyone we meet.

World in Front of the Text//Applied to Caroline Chisholm's Actions
This message applies to our lives today as we must love our neighbour and show compassion towards everyone. The target audience for this parable is everyone in our world today however more specifically children. We need to understand that although you may not like someone you should put aside your differences and help those who are in need. I think that this parable targets mainly children as we need to not hold grudges and learn to love all our peers. The people you least expect may come to help you one day when those you depend on don’t which is therefore why we should learn to love our neighbour and care for those who are in need.

Caroline’s actions clearly represent those within The Good Samaritan Luke 10:25-37. She has clearly stated that she lived by this parable and several biographers believe that she based the majority of her work on this parable. The vulnerable female immigrants represent the injured man as many people clearly avoided them just like the priest and Levite avoiding the injured Jew. However Caroline’s actions saved these girls, she looked after them, gave them a home and helped pay for their needs just like the good Samaritan did in the parable. Caroline loved her neighbours like herself and showed compassion towards everyone she met. She didn’t take in to account what background they came from instead she saw that they needed help so she assisted them. The message of this parable was well interpreted by her as she went out to spread the word, to ensure that everybody had a place in society and wasn’t ignored. Caroline Chisholm was a living witness to Jesus which everyone should aim to be.

Caroline was an influential pioneer and through her memoirs and those written about her, we are able to gather more information on who she was and what inspired her actions.

In London 1842, she wrote about her call to assist others. This passage explains in more detail her inspiration towards her actions and how she began her journey to improving the lives of others. “I was impressed with the idea God had, in a peculiar manner, fitted me for this work; and yet I hesitated… my delay pressed on my mind as a sin; and when I heard of a poor girl suffering distress and losing here reputation in consequence, I felt that I was not clear of her sin, for I did not do all I could do to prevent it.”

By reading this memoir it can be shown that from the beginning Caroline had an attraction to doing good in the world. She felt as if it was her responsibility to help those who are less fortunate and believed that God had called her to change the lives of others. When she backed down from situations she felt the guilt within herself and the sin of others. Overall Caroline Chisholm lived her life doing what she loved and felt remorse when she did not help those in need.

Another memoir that stood out amongst her quotes was written by Caroline herself stating…

I promise to know neither country nor creed, but to serve all justly and impartially – Caroline Chisholm

Through reading this quote, it can be shown that throughout each of Caroline’s works she did not judge people by their race or where they came from instead she saw someone in need and attended to them. Caroline Chisholm followed in the footsteps of God and God assisted people from all different backgrounds, therefore, she did the same spreading this message throughout her life. From this quote, we can take a message away into our everyday lives is don’t judge people due to their looks or where they come from and treat everyone the same.

A memoir in the Henry Parkes Newspaper demonstrates how she was seen within society by others stating…

If Captain James Cook discovered Australia - if John Macarthur planted the first seeds of its extraordinary prosperity - if Ludwig Leichardt penetrated and explored it's before unknown interior – Caroline Chisholm has done more – she alone has colonised in the true sense of the term.

From this memoir, it can be displayed that Caroline Chisholm had an influential impact on not just those who she improved the lives of but several people within the society. This quote recognised her important work within the early days of settlement and her dedication to providing justice to those who are less fortunate.

The last memoir was a poem written by Henry Kendall based on the actions of Caroline Chisholm throughout her life...
God’s servant came forth from the South: she told of a plentiful land;

And wisdom was set in her mouth, and strength in the thews [sinews] of her hand.

She lifted them out of their fear, and they thought her their Moses and said;

“We shall follow you, sister, from here to the country of sunshine and bread.”

She fed them, and led them away, through the tempest and tropical heat,

Till they reached the far regions of day and sweet-scented spaces of wheat.

She hath made them home with her hand, and they bloom like the summery vines;

For they eat of the fat of the land and drink of its glittering wines.

From this poem, it can be displayed that Caroline Chisholm was extremely dedicated to her work and the improvement of others lives. This poem recognised the practicality of her work and acknowledged her for all her efforts within our world.

Caroline Chisholm was influenced by multiple quotes throughout her lifetime however, in particular, she was inspired by a quote from the Good Samaritan, “Love thy neighbour”. An example of her displaying this message is demonstrated through the story of Caroline and a young girl named Flora. Caroline had been counselling Flora after she had just begun a relationship with a married man. A few months later she ran into Flora at a ferry terminal, however, she was drunk and Caroline knew she was also extremely distressed. Caroline walked by her side and her suspicion of thinking she was distressed was confirmed. Flora was pregnant and intended to drown herself. Instead of leaving her alone Caroline remained with Flora until she regained her composure and insured that she would not commit suicide. Caroline insured Flora’s mental state and found her suitable accommodation, before moving on.

The quote from the Good Samaritan was displayed throughout this story but also in other moments throughout her life. This story is a prime example of where her practices and values helped her bear witness to God in her everyday life. She used the quote “Love thy neighbour” to inspire her actions while also changing the lives of many in the community.

The legacy of Caroline Chisholm

Through Caroline Chisholm’s actions she has left a legacy that still exists in the 21st century. She founded several schools in which she taught the priestly, prophetic and kingly roles of Jesus Christ and continues to have multiple schools named after her. She was such an influential pioneer that she even featured on the Australian five dollar note. Although this note was changed later on in life there are still many organisations that have been inspired by her works and continue the works of Caroline in our society today. One of the foundations that are continuing Caroline’s work in our society today are the Caroline Chisholm Education Foundation. Their mission is to assist students in financial hardship receive a high quality, vocational educational qualification at Chisholm Institute. This foundation continues her legacy through social justice and insures that they children are in a stable financial condition to provide for themselves.

Another way Caroline’s actions are being recognised in our society today is through the Caroline Chisholm Institute. This organisation supports mothers with their babies and toddlers as well as ensuring the people around you are supported. If people are faced with domestic violence or even on the verge of being homeless they are able to offer people material goods to ease financial stress. For many they are also able to provide social and emotional support through mental health issues. There main goal is to be there to support you and offer a safe environment for your kids. Just like this organisation Caroline provided support for female immigrants, provided them with homes and assisted them in getting a job to support their families. This organisation continues the legacy of Caroline Chisholm through showing compassion to everyone, respecting life, insuring that there is recognition of diversity and lastly the importance of social justice.

Caroline Chisholm was a believer of change and worked to improve the lives of those who were affected by unfair situations. Due to the action, she took against injustice, respect for human dignity and her overall work around all parts of society she was seen as a prophet of the laity. An instance where this is displayed is her prophetic work among the church communicating several values of social justice. Her devotion to living out her faith and daily practices while also committing to living out the actions of Jesus shows her priestly work. As Caroline Chisholm grew respect throughout the community she became a voice for others and used this voice to promote improved conditions for female immigrants. In her time she wrote several letters to leaders and often met with the governor to bring changes to the social structure and processes. She used her leadership and power to spread the word of the kingly work of Jesus Christ. Caroline Chisholm was a leader and through her everyday life, she displayed these values to assist those in the community.

Throughout her life, Caroline assisted several people within our world. She helped the poor, gave them a place to live and assisted people in finding jobs that earned enough money to support their families. She insured that people had the right that they were not given by others and insured that the poor were given the dignity they deserved from the beginning. Overall she improved the lives of several people and multiple years after her death her actions were addressed in The Condition of Labour (Rerum Novarum), Pope Leo XIII 1891.

The encyclical The Condition of Labor (Rerum Novarum), Pope Leo XIII 1891 had several messages for us to take away today, however, the three core messages that were portrayed were, the common good, the balance between labour and capital and the role of the state. The encyclical stated that the poor were not being treated fairly and the capital cannot do without labour and capital. Through the encyclical the Pope stated that those people who are poor should rise above and improve their lives, he addressed the issue that the state should ensure the wellbeing of all humans including both the poor and the rich. He declared that everyone has the right to private ownership however you must balance that right against the idea of the common good. The encyclical defined that more should be done for the working class, it talks about the dignity of a person, the work that is available that satisfies all social classes and the promoting of community development. Each of these things are factors that Caroline Chisholm was attempting to achieve in her life and all of this marked the beginning of the social Catholic teachings and brought human dignity rights to our world.
