Green Computing Policy:

At Vishnu Boys Hindu College, the school in 2018 formed a Tech Club. The immediate objective of this club was to engage students in a process which would allow them to bring in used and old computers be it desktops or laptops. The students guided by Mr. Yuva Roopchansingh and others were involved in salvaging parts from the computers that could in turn be used to refurbish old computers or even enhance the features of others that were not particularly old or outdated. This enabled a reduction in technological waste to a considerable degree.

It is imperative that the school adopt a policy which would ensure that students are monitored especially when it comes to their direct involvement in this process. The school has to ensure that students continue to participate in this initiative while at the same time, bringing in technological appliances that may add some viability to those that are presently being used at school or even by students at home.

The policy can include the incorporation of communication links with external resources such as recycling companies that will distribute resources for this process.
With this development of communication channels, they can aid in the preservation and disposal of digital equipment. They will instigate new mechanisms via programs that will encourage individuals to properly dispose of the items.
At Vishnu Boys, we have forums/ clubs where the students have been sensitized to the issue and how they can be involved in this area. Additionally, these companies aforementioned can now be invited to do sessions, displays and programs within the school to further raise awareness of proper disposal procedures.

The Green Computing Policy section of the ICT Policy document provided an overview of the best practices for working with and the disposal of electronic devices in a safe and responsible manner that protects the environment. One recommendation for a policy amendment is that it needs to directly address students’ roles and responsibilities in achieving GCP goals.

In terms of operational policies for use in our school, one green computing policy that could be developed further involves students’ daily behaviours and interactions with technology. Right now the push to refurbish and reuse or even properly dispose of devices is done voluntarily by a group of students. A school policy would regularise this and make it the responsibility of the entire school body.

1. More attention should be given to promoting this Green Policy as we continue to use technology in all aspects of life.

2. Sensitization to the Public is paramount as many times individuals do not know how to dispose of or treat with unused parts/computers. Such information can be disseminated at schools, offices, companies etc.
