In Portugal we have several Christmas tales.
This is our favorite.

Christmas candle sale

Once upon a time, a poor shoemaker lived in a hut, near a humble village. As he liked to help travelers who passed by his house at night, the shoemaker left a candle lit every night in the window of the house, to light their way.

At one point, there was a great war that caused all the young people to leave, leaving the village even poorer and sadder. Seeing the persistence of that poor shoemaker, who continued to live his life full of hope and kindness, the people of the village decided to imitate him. And on Christmas Eve night, everyone lit a candle in their home. Thus illuminating the entire village.

At midnight, the church bells began to ring, announcing the good news: the war was over and the young men were returning to their homes! Everyone shouted, “It's a miracle! It is the miracle of candles! ”. Missa do Galo is the mass celebrated on Christmas Eve that starts at midnight from the 24th to the 25th of December. The expression “Missa do Galo” is specific to Latin countries and derives from the ancestral legend that at midnight on December 24th a rooster would have crowed loudly, as never heard of another similar animal, announcing the coming of the baby Jesus.
