When World War 1 broke out Australia and New Zealand were already independant, but still close with Britain. So it was only natural that Australia and New Zealand would participate in the war helping the allied force.
The most important event in World War 1 for the Anzacs, was the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Where they attacked Gallipoli, because they hoped it would lead to capturing Constantinople
It was there the soldiers from New Zealand joined the Australian soldiers, so they together could sail to Europe, it was on that journey the Anzacs was founded.
Together with the Allied forces the Anzacs landed at Gallipoli the 25th of April at dawn, were they met great resistance from the Ottoman and German Army.
The Anzacs suffered heavy loses, and the 19th December 1915 they decided to evacuate. They completed their retreat the 9th of January 1916.

Since then the Anzacs have been honored with great respect, and is considered as one of the most essential* events to forming the independent national identity of the two contries.
