The conch symbolizes authority and order is exactly what Ralph has, but does he really? Ralph was elected to take responsibility for the actions and wellbeing of the group, and has done so until recently. Jack and his hunters are slowly but surely gaining more power and authority over due to a plethora of reasons. Due to the lack of elders on the island the children have begin to disregard their previous respect towards authority. Jack’s savage and primal ways of life are more appealing to the children

The conch is no longer the symbol if order it once was. The more Jack gains power the conch becomes more and more forgotten. Throughout the chapters ralph has lost his power over the other children. Jack uses the beast to manipulate the littluns to follow his lead. It's important because the littluns would not survive under Jack's leadership. Under Jack's leadership the children will never get rescued.

The power and leader ship on the island has shifted because of other haracters who have brought more gruesome behaviours. In chapter one Ralph was the established leader with Jack also wanting to be a leader. The conch also helped establish order as the kids are only allowed to speak when they have the conch. In later chapters Jack intimidates the rest of the kids into following him, as seen in chapter four when Sam and Eric were compelled by the mask to follow Jack.

In the beginning of chapter one Ralph was voted leader because of his physical appearance. Jack has shown that he is better fit to be leader throughout the novel. Ralph has lost some of the respect in the group because he does not please the group or make them happy. He only focuses on hard work and being rescued, and allows no time to have fun. Jack has proven that he has the guts to be a leader and he fulfills the needs of the group. He was able to kill the pig but he still enjoys relaxing and having fun, he is not as up tight as Ralph.

A leader is someone who has power and guides his people throught struggles. A prosperous society is reliant on a good leader ,but people always make the wrong decision. The best choice is not always what people need as people elect leader to deal with perceived problems. Ralph is initially the leader, but people start to lose faith in him and choose Jack .Jack gets popularity as a leader because of populism as he promises to deal with everyone's perceived problems such as the "beastie ".

Leadership has shifted in chapter 1, as Ralph and Jack battle for power over who is more powerful. In the beginning of the novel all of the boys meet for the first time, and get to know each other. As the book progresses the boys start to notice each other’s strengths and weaknesses which plays a role in the conflict between Ralph and Jack. Ralph is labeled as the leader, mostly for his good looks, but after Jack kills the pig a change in him occurs causing him to be more ruthless. Jack can be seen in chapter 5 showing power because he led the choir in the hunt, while Ralph is scared of losing control over the other boys.

Between Chapters 1 and 6 in the novel, Lord of the Flies, there has been a major shift in power from one person to another. The role of Chief shifted from Ralph to Jack. In the earlier chapter in the Novel, the kids were quite firm in what they wanted to do or what they wanted to have done. The Children wanted a leader and wanted everyone to have a part in surviving on the island. As the story progresses, more problems started to rise which caused more arguments among the kids and also caused tensions to rise. When things continued to go wrong, the order on the island started to break down.

Power and leadership have shifted on the island because Jack and the others believe that Ralph does not make a good leader anymore. They both want to be the leader of the group. Ralph was chosen to be leader because of his physical appearance, not his leadership skills. He is more responsible than Jack because Jack acts before he thinks about the outcome. They have good ideas for survival but do not listen to each other. Jack disobeys and doesn’t have any respect for Ralph and his decisions.

In the first chapter, there is a very different atmosphere regarding the boys on the island. In chapter one, the boys on the island listened to Ralph more and respected his leadership role much more. The way that the boys on the island act has changed very much as all of them have evolved amd developed more skills. In chapter one, Jack was unable to kill the pig “because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh” (Golding 29). There is a major shift in the way that the boys treat Ralph and each other in chapter 5-6.

Golding’s inspiration for the book was based off the events of WWII. The soldier who parachuted down to the mountains shows how Golding portrays the kids in the novel because Golding has returned from the war with the realization of the human savegery.

Leadership between Jack and Ralph alternates since chapter 1 by how they disagree on what needs to be done on the island and how they want different needs in terms of survival. In chapter 6, Jack does not use the conch responsibly by talking without it and Ralph has to reassure others like Jack, then arguments breakout between all the boys. This shows how situations like this can determine future roles between Jack and Ralph for who leads on the island.

Meanwhile, this power has been finding it's way to Jack, this shift symbolizes the boys drifting away from society and order to a more primal state.

Golding uses"personal hell"to represent the pain Ralph is enduring as the chief. He is tired of leading the boys after he realize how difficult it is to maintain the rules, while all the negatives are causing their community to break apart. When Ralph just became the chief,he was successful on keeping the kids under his rules to protect the human part of themselves. However,as time goes by,various issues started to emerge and is now slowly influencing all the children. They are not as obedient to Ralph's authority, they will not listen to his voice as closely as before, and they are losing their human selves.Ralph sees clearly now that his power and rules are not enough to restrict them.He is not happy because he does not want to take this responsibility anymore, but the boys need him to be the leader instead of the savage Jack. So Ralph is forced to stay in this miserable situation:painful, tired and lost, but still trying to move on with the pressure of everyone's hopes and dreams on his back.
