- Militarism was putting the military on a pedestal above all else in a society. Many European countries took this to an extreme. Germany had increased its navy which worried the English who then increased their navy as if they were preparing for something big. The French wanted to show that they had power too and so they increased their military as well.

- Nationalism is a love for one´s country taken to the extreme. Industrialization made schools available to the public and raised the armies of WW1. These armies grew up believing that their country was better than the rest and they needed to prove it.

- Imperialism is when one country expands their influence through means of conquering territory, either new or owned already. Imperialism brought on the war for territory all over the world, especially Africa. This only increased the tensions between the Europeans.

- An alliance is a relationship based on similar interests. The European alliances played a big role because after the assassination, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia which meant that Hungary's ally, Germany, would have to enter the war too. They were known as the Central Powers. Serbia's alliance was with Russia who had an alliance with France. The Belgians wanted nothing to do with the war but since Germany was planning on invading them, they had no choice but to ask Britain for help against the Germans. The countries were known as the Allies.

- An Assassination in an action of assassinating someone. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand is one of the reasons which led to the war. This made Austria Hungary furious declaring war on Serbia. This only led to a series of countries declaring war on each other.

Trench warfare was when two opposing forces would dig series of trenches for protection from the opposing force. These trenches were very deadly. The unsanitary conditions and close quarters allowed for diseases like dysentery and typhoid fever to spread rapidly and the excruciating amount of time spent in the trenches was a detriment to the soldier's mental health. Many soldiers suffered from PTSD from the time they spent being bombarded in the small trenches with nowhere to go, waiting either for the bombs to stop or death.

Disease ran rampant in WW1 due to the lack of medical knowledge and the conditions of the battlefield. Diseases like trench foot and trench fever were caused by the unsanitary conditions in the trenches. Trench foot was caused by exposure to water and not drying your feet properly. Soldiers would get blisters and skin would fall off the feet. If left untreated, the foot would have to be amputated due to gangrene. Deadly diseases such as typhoid fever and influenza claimed many lives as well. Over 2 million soldiers died from diseases in WW1.

Women had entered the work force to help meet the high amount of weapons, ammunition, and uniforms that were needed for the war. Jobs that had previously been ¨men only¨ were now being held by women such as police officers, firefighters, and bus conductresses.

The Treaty of Versailles was a peace document signed by the Allies and Germany. Germany had to take guilt for the war as they were seen as the main aggressor. Germany also had to payback every bit of debt caused by the war and the German army could only have 100,000 officers. The passiveness of the League of Nations allowed several revisions to be made to the treaty and by 1938, only the territorial rules were still in place. This allowed the rise of Adolf Hitler and the beginning of the second World War.
