Weiwei was particularly interesting in the crafts that had been wiped out by China’s Cultural Revolution. This came after he learnt about “The Four Olds” Being old customs, old culture, old habits and old ideas, the principles that were held responsible for holding back China’s development at the time. Massive amounts of damage was done to all of China’s antiquities and cultural heritage sights, which is why Weiwei wanted to recreate that through his artwork. His use only black and white shows that it was a dark part of Chinese history that needs to be remembered in contrast to the views of the Chinese government that it needed to be hidden.

‘Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn’ is a dark artwork that reflects Weiwei’s distain for the actions of the Chinese government. In today’s society, this destruction is seen as an outrage, but he is trying to convey the story of what actually happened during the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the anger seen by many Chinese civilians over the destruction of their history.

This can be attributed to the ‘shock’ aspect that comes with his campaign. “Murinal” on the most basic level is to visually represent Trumps ‘Potty-mouth’. Duke and Griffin are able to further their argument through using a predominantly monochromatic colour pallet which is then harshly contrasted by the bold red lip-shaped urinal which helps to draw the viewer’s eye inwards whilst also emphasising the notion that everything that Trump says “belongs in a toilet.”
