Teenagers loved to dance and the song "The Twist" written by Hank Ballard in 1959 but popularized by Chubby Checker in 1960 became very popular by its successful dance. Elvis Presley, or "The King of Rock", came out with genius songs "It's Now Or Never" and "Are You Lonesome Tonight" in 1960 which instantly became big hits in the decade. Girl Groups like the Shirelles, the Ronettes, the Marvelettes and the Chiffons also contributed to many hits. By 1963, the Beach Boys were the new and upcoming group. In late '63, teenagers began paying closer attention to some new sounds coming out of the UK. Consequently, the Beatles wrote their first song entirely for America, "I Want To Hold Your Hand". The Beatles went on dominating the charts with the Rolling Stones, another band from the UK. The way teenagers in America listen to music would never be the same again after the contribution of the Beatles to Rock N' Roll.

Favorite shows from this decade are The Andy Griffith Show and The Beverly Hillbillies. Some more shows from the sixties that I still watch and personally enjoy are The Addams Family, The Flintstones, Batman, and, of course, Star Trek.

This specific type of people for the sixties are known as "greasers". Greasers were valued for their "bad boy" image and were stereotyped as reckless, dangerous, and rebellious juveniles. Greasers were born after World War II when American youths would act out to simply escape boredom. They often wore fitting white t-shirts, black leather jackets, blue or black jeans, and army boots. Think of Danny Zuko from everyone's favorite movie "Grease", which was released in 1978.

Like all decades, slang is a major part of society and really emphasizes the youth's way of speech and even mindset. Slang of the sixties can mean two very opposite things. For example, the word "bad" literally means "worse", but society then would use the term to mean the opposite, "awesome". A lot of the slang from the sixties is still used today: "chick" refers to a girl or woman, "what a bummer" means "how depressing", "old man" refers to one's father, and "sad" would be used as a term of disapproval.

1947 - 1991: On top of the stress of the Vietnam War, the sixties also had to worry about the Cold War against the Soviet Union to end communism once and for all.

The black and white eye makeup consisted of black shadow in the crease and white shadow over the eyelid, as exemplified by the sixties model Twiggy as appeared on the cover of many magazines. Long bell bottom pants were hippie must-haves in the sixties for women. Lots of the fashion of the sixties were based on models and music.

1962: Light-Emitting Diodes (LED) were developed by Nick Holonyak Jr. This was a red LED, the first LED that could be seen by the human eye. They first appeared only in alphanumeric displays, handheld calculators, and as indicators, as they weren't very bright or cheap. However, slowly through the decades, they became brighter and cheaper. LED lights began showing up in commercial products, such as light bulbs used today.
1968: Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) memory chip vastly increased the memory capacity of computers at a cheaper price. This allowed a diverse set of even more powerful technology to be created, distributed, and use for mainstream consumers or to find certain data at an affordable price. The DRAM chip was invented by Robert H. Dennard.
