Ground Rules

Starting day 1, ground rules will be established. At a "Capture Kids' Heart" campus, all groups (classroom, small groups, clubs, etc) create a social contract as a guide to how to treat one another. This contract is created by 4 central questions. These questions are: how do you want to be treated by the leader, how do you want to treat each other, how do you think the leader wants to be treated, and how do you want to treat each other in times of conflict? The group will create this contract on day one and everyone will get an opportunity to sign it, including the leader. The group members are the one who come up with the words we put on the social contract, with some teacher guidance. For example, I want to make sure "respectful" and "no put downs" gets put on the contract, so I will add those two if no one else does. The group members will be held accountable to follow this social contract.

Stage 1 - After making our social contract from day 1 we will talk about a certain word each meeting. For example, the word we focus on may be respect. We would go over what they means, and how we can show it in the group. I will make sure to go over how keeping what is shared in this group confidential is a respectful thing to do for your group members. We will go over how breaking confidentially is breaking trust, and hurting someone's heart. If the group is not seeming to get it I will take time to a "hurt heart" lesson. Essentially, I will start with a paper heart, students will give me examples of mean words, and I will fold the heart each time. Then they will give kind words and I will unfold the heart. I will show how I can get my heart back to the original size, but the creases from the mean words will still be there. When we close out the group, we will end with a launch, a quote or video about our topic that will launch the students back into class time.
Stage 2 - Each session will include a self reflection to track progress in the group. They will respond either verbally or with written expression. We will continue to go over our social contract each session and focus on different ways would we like to treat either.
Stage 3 - When the group is coming to the end, members will be given a post assessment to see what they have learned and reflect on ways they have grown. I will check in with teachers to see what strategies they have been using in class and see if any more support is needed. Additionally, I will remind the students how important confidentiality is. If it is broken, students fill need to come back to the school counselor to restore relationships.
