My name is Jessica and I am currently studying to become an RN, with the goal of becoming a NP with a specialty in psychiatry. My main goal with wanting to become a NP is to be able to give patients care without them having to be admitted to a psych facility if that is possible. I am a mother to two boys ages 11 & 2 and a 5 year old rescue husky.

After speaking with my friends’ mom, I decided to do my presentation on ER admission times for psychiatric patients. For a patient to be able to be admitted into a psychiatric ward at a hospital they must first be seen in the ER to be evaluated and then from there moved to the psych ward for further treatment and evaluation. She was telling me that they have patients that have sat in the ER for days waiting to be able to be admitted because of the lack of nurses and people available to work and take care of patients. This in turn leads to problems of people not being able to get the psychiatric care that they need to be able to thrive in daily life. Another topic that she brought up that goes along with this is the fact that there is also a lack of communication between facilities and hospitals that care for the same patient. When they are trying to get information regarding the clients, either from the social worker or nurses themselves, it will take them days to get any update on anything that is going on with said client. Which makes treatment and medication checks harder for those in the other facility to be able to care for the clients and their needs. Even though they are clients of both places. I feel strongly that these are areas in healthcare that need to be worked on to provide the best care possible for the clients and ensure that they have the best quality of life despite whatever needs that they may have. Proper medication and treatment for these should be something that is taken seriously. Especially with the rise in mental health issues in today’s world.
