Zaroff, a skilled hunter who had gotten bored of the "normal" way of hunting.

Ivan, Zaroff's assistant who was killed by one of Rainford's traps during the game.

Rainford was introduced as a ruthless hunter who enjoys hunting and is careless for animal lives. Eventually, during the game, he learns what it's like to be a prey (terrified and running for its life) while being chased by Zaroff.

Zaroff was described as a very talented hunter, so much that he has never failed in it, making him very prideful and arrogant, believing that he would always succeed, even if the "prey" were human.

Rainford was forced to participate in a game that could cost him his life.

During the final chase, Rainford's trap successfully kills Ivan.

The relationship of the hunter and the prey could change easily, so stay alert.

Mary Maloney: First, she is seen as a doting wife, excited for her husband to arrive home. When she murders him, it's clear that she is also an innocent character, given her reaction. Still, she has the cunning ability to think through her next movements and figure out how to get away, even giggling at the irony at the end. She is a round or even dynamic, fleshed out character.

Mr. Maloney: He is characterized as unfeeling and static, although likely a "good man" (of the time)- his character doesn't change while he is involved in the story.

Policemen: Although they aren't bumbling fools, they are still rather oblivious, specifically when they literally eat the murder weapon. I loved that part...

The primary conflict is that Mary Maloney cannot have a life that is respected by society without a husband. Therefore, when he tells her that he wants to get a divorce, she must kill him.

The climax of the story is when Mary hits her husband in the back of the head with a frozen leg of lamb, killing him.

The people that society paints as innocent and harmless can be the most decieving.

Exposition: The paragraphs leading up to Mr. Maloney arriving home.

Rising action: Mr. Maloney is acting strange and distant. Eventually, he admits that things need to change- implying divorce.

Climax: Mary goes to the basement, still in denial. She gets a leg of lamb to cook for supper, which she then kills Mr. Maloney with.

Falling action: She goes to the grocery store, acting as normal as possible, then messes the house up and calls the police to report the murder. They struggle to find the murder weapon, which is cooking in the oven.

Resolution: The police men eat the murder weapon, which is very ironic and pretty funny, in my opinion. They would never suspect Mrs. Maloney because she is an innocent woman, six months pregnant at the time.
