1)  They make travel coming from the east coast or Europe faster.
2)  They bring goods to trade from eastern locations.
3) In the past, they were an active part of the slave trade. They brought slaves from Africa to the Americas. Slavery is wrong and brought lots of damage to African cultures. The Earth takes 24 hours to make one rotation on its axis.  That means that a spot on the equator has to move faster than a spot at the north pole in order to get turned all the way in those 24 hours.
