Hi Everyone, I would like to open discussion about the topics in the title (above). These topics arose in response to my participation in "Healing Trauma in the Body in CI as it relates to consent" lecture on Friday evening, which was a very revealing, honest and informative session. Thank you, Rythea. As a someone who deals with dissociation often and have learned to manage this with somatic awareness tools and even use it as a gift to tap into expanded states of awareness, I actively use elements of CI, among other somatic modalities as a psychiatric group facilitator. I have specialized with somatic integration, supporting individuals with dissociative disorders, including complex PTSD and history of psychosis. I would like to use this thread to create awareness and inclusivity, understanding that each of us are wired uniquely and even trauma is not black and white, however a spectrum. I would like to invite others if they wish to share personal anecdotes, reflections and sentiments. I'm going to start sharing what came up for me, which could potentially serve as an opening discussion about awareness, trauma sensitivity and safety guidelines in a CI space.

My intention is to acknowledge, that not everybody has a functioning alarm system (including myself) and in also to paint a picture through an anecdotal story, what might a loss of executive functioning look like, so we can all have this awareness and be sensitive to those who are wired in this way.

My anecdotal storyIn my story I painted a picture of a moment in dance where dissociation happened with the freeze and fawn response, and a successful intervention our CI team member employed. I wanted to give a felt experience to the listeners from a first person account, and offer a solution a bystander could employ and check without intrusion whether assistance was needed. In my case, the following approach worked very well. A third person, I called a friend, joined our duo. I forgot to mention that the friend who joined the duo to offer a moment of check-in and possible outlet for an exit, was in fact a CI dancer on duty who was monitoring the safety of the space at our jam. A third person entering the dance offers an outlet for someone who may have gotten hijacked by dissociation to regain their abilities to mobilize and exit. This approach is also great, because it offers a moment of check-in for both dancers in the duo. If one of the dancers doesn't have an alarm system, they would have likely continued in the dance and only in RETROSPECT feel uncomfortable about what happened. Having a moment of check-in with a third person entering offers so much. In my anecdotal story I wanted to make this point, that a third person entering a duo, is a very powerful method to employ as a monitor. In my experience it is powerful, because it is unassuming, it is non-verbal and it gives an opportunity to take-it-or-leave-it. It doesn't necessarily interrupt the flow of the dance, but it does give an opportunity for change, especially for those who get immersed so deeply and may lack the alarm system to discern for themselves in this moment of check-in. I am bringing this up to our awareness as a form of being sensitive to those with trauma and to be aware that trauma can be invisible and the dancer themselves may not even know they have had trauma if it is preverbal or developmental. We all are wired in a particular way and we are discovering it as we go. Somatic awareness emerges into consciousness the deeper we explore our embodiment. Thus, a dancer might discover their wiring only through moments in dance. CI is an excellent platform for self-discovery.

Creating a Trauma Sensitive CI space: An excellent solution would be for every CI jam to have a monitor (I wonder what others think about this). Even a bystander, if they feel in doubt, whether someone is having a difficulty, a reliable way to interject and offer a possibility for an exit for a person is by entering the duo-in-question non-verbally and giving the opportunity for the participants to let you know through non-verbal interaction: 1. "We are good and prefer to continue our duet without you". Then in this case you got your confirmation, all is well, and you flowed in and out without verbally imposing yourself onto others and interrupting their flow 2. Opportunity to leave: the dancer with difficulty could take the opportunity to leave their previous dance by joining the person who came to check on them 3. Opportunity to leave: the person who came to check on them could take the spot of the dancer in distress and the dancer has an opportunity to leave the dance altogether. I wanted to offer this strategy, as it has proven to work well, time after time, in our CI jam space in Santa Monica, CA. I find this much better than interrupting a duo in question verbally, because verbal questioning could be counterproductive. It can generate defensiveness, and even the dancer in distress (if tendency to fawn/freeze) may be overwhelmed by shame and claim nothing was wrong (because they are still in the fawn response).
