Using writing to learn activities in my classrooms could be useful for students, especially for those who are not very interested in learning Science and, above all, for those who are unaware oh what critical thinking means: they just repeat what they’ve read in the textbook or written on their notebook.

I think that I would leave them free to choose between 2 or 3 options: maybe writing a poem could sound very hard for some of them, whereas a letter could be more suitable. An interesting activity could be to imagine an impossible interview with a dead scientist or a dialogue between two of them (think of Darwin and Lamarck discussing about evolutionary mechanisms).

Because it is a more funny, creative and motivating way in the learning process of students. And if it is successful, it strengthens their learning. However, the teacher has to be familiar with the many kind of such activities so that he can experiment with his students to find the practice that will have the most motivation effect. I surely want to experiment with more kinds of writing to learn activities that the ones that I usually use. e.g. the recent activity that my students seem to like a lot: developing of biological models in the class.

I think I should use writing to learn activities because I have very less motivated students and, according with the teachers in the videos, this can encrease their motivation; I could use this activities in two times: at the beginning of a new unit to check up their pregresse knowledge on it asking to write down everything they know about the topic and, then, at the end of the unit, I could ask to summarise what they have understood and compare it with their pregresse knowledge. I believe that poems is very hard to do and, in my opinion, the letter to a friend is more effective.

I think I use writing for
helping my students be a method
very positive not only for the group of the best but also for the group of demotivated students to increase their desire to study, as suggested by the teachers in the video presentation. in planning this activity I will use two times at the beginning of a new unit to verify their previous knowledge asking to write everything they know about the subject and, therefore, at the end of the unit, I could ask to summarize what they understood and compared with their prior knowledge. Writing is really importen for memorising new gained knowledge, if students reflect that new knowledge, it helps them to keep it in minde and remember it better.
The best thing to start this process is, to let students do their own notes, so they have to think about, what is important. But selfreflection in the end shouldn't be underestimated.

Looking through the prism of my school experiences as a student - I hated elaborations. Now, however, I am thinking about this form of work for my students. I think that I will start with a poem for willing pupils, and then I will think about it for the whole class. As I have said before, Writing to Learn activities improve students' soft skills; among them: creativity, critical thinking, argumentation, exposition, reflection, etc. They also train the skills of calibration, self-confidence and self-evaluation.
Learning science involves knowing how to speak it and write it down. Writing a text requires organizing, structuring, selecting the best ideas and arguing them. Writing requires relating and confronting previous knowledge with the new situation (Sanmartí, 2007).

My students use writing to describe laboratory experiments and their observations, to summarize books, make exersicises but they have never write letters, poems or a Journal science. These last ones could be a good way to stimulate my students to learn science. I ‘d like they write letters. I could ask them to write a letter, in which I give them some directions, to one of other students by e mail. I think that I will try to include writing to learn activities as an attempt to (a) clear misconceptions, (b) motivate students that are not enticed by the usual forms of scientific reporting and (c) to encourage my students connect scientific concepts to real-life situations.

I think that for regular writing to learn activities it would be best to ask students to keep a journal. That would be my preference. Letters (or more realistically e-mails to friends or a post on social media) could also be an option to include every now and then.

In my subjects (Biology/Geology) there is a lot of vocabulary and many concepts to learn. Writing to learn activities may contribute to clarify concepts, to establish links between them and to highlight and discuss misconceptions. I sum, to help students make a meaningful learning. While seeing the videos I came across the idea that these activities may also motivate students not interested in science lessons.

The activities we have been told about (poems, diary, letter writing) are mainly used after the implementation of a lesson or a unit. In my opinion, it would be necessary to promote writing tasks during the whole lesson.

As most of my students are over 16, I think that instead of letter writing exclusively to peers, it would be interesting to suggest them to write letters to institutions, such as the school council, district departments, local community groups, webs, journals, the school magazine …

Sometimes I use diaries to help my younger students to be aware of their progress and not to lose track of what they are doing and why, particularly when carrying out cooperative projects.

I never tried poems. I will ask language teachers and discuss the possibility to prepare joint activities.

At the end of the experimental activities I always ask my students to draw up a report of the experience carried out. Sometimes I ask them to compose a presentation of the results obtained in the form of an "oral communication to congress", which only need to write the title, abstract, main results with graphs and tables, conclusions and illustrate it to the class. First we studied how to submit scientific communications to indexed journals.
From this type of communication follows an evaluation for the student speaker.

Pupil:
- can go back to what he has learned, follow his development, progress,
- builds faith in its capabilities,
- he is not afraid of making mistakes because he is not evaluated,
- engages in science and learns more consciously,
- learns to listen to colleagues,
- perfect writing skills,
- builds good relations in the classroom, etc.
Teacher:

In my classroom I often use writing for learning. This takes place in every lesson and usually has a short form. These can be: summary sentences, technique 3-2-1: the student writes 3 things he learned, 2. things he would like to know better, the first question he would like to ask, a short summary, a collage. Students write individual, in pairs or in groups.
So far, I have not used longer forms of writing in teaching, learning. I'm going to get to know "Expressive forms" and "Transactional forms". I need to read and try some of them in my classroom

I think I may use it more for teaching and learning grammar to increase my students competence in the field. I could use "writing to learn activities" in the ellaboration of documents for my etwinning projects. For example we went on two fieldtrips related to environmental sustainability in agricultural practices. My pupils are now going through the process of reading their notes and writing texts where they choose, put together and compare what they observed during the fieldtrips. They also explore information on the eTwinning partner's area and make written comparisons between the two countries and areas under study. I would like writing to learn activities with letters, poems and a newspaper in padlet writing as news.

Writing to learn activities can help students build confidence in their thinking (especially those who are less likely to share their thinking in the whole class setting). Writing to learn activities provide students with opportunities to revisit, review, and refine their thinking and learning. By including the writing process with their scientific thinking, it can increase their processing skills and the understanding of knowledge, concepts, and skills. I already use writing to learn activities as a part of my science teaching and learning, but I through this module, I have learned additional ways that I can incorporate these activities (increase their use) and alternative ways to assess their work!

They have to think about what they know about the subject and how to use that knowledge in life. They have to process the information before puting it down on paper.
They could write a letter to their great-great - great -grandfather about modern day life (e.g. electricity, wi-fi, cloning).

The writings provide a feedback. the data for the evaluation is eliminated. for example I keep the diary of the day course.

It provides a good flow of ideas and also help in recalling the concepts learnt earlier and organise the thoughts in a systematic manners. It gives the students freedom to express in whichever way they are comfortable. I will try and include the poetic method as it seems quite appealing to me.

(1) Well, I should use “write to learn activities” because it is a student centered approach that fosters creativity.

(2) I could use writing to learn activities in any form of presentation that marks student’s engagement. That could be, presentations of the experimental design, of the results or the proposal for future experiments.
