- Directors are responsible for creatively translating the film's written script into actual images and sounds on the screen. They are ultimately responsible for a film's artistic and commercial success or failure.

Directors may write the film's script or commission it to be written, or they may be hired after an early draft of the script is complete. They must then develop a vision for the finished film and work out how to achieve it.

During pre-production, Directors make crucial decisions, such as selecting the right cast, crew and locations for the film. They then direct rehearsals and the performances of the actors once the film is in production.

They also manage the technical aspects of filming including the camera, sound, lighting, design and special effects departments.

During post production, Directors work closely with editors through the many technical processes of editing, to reach the final cut or version of the film.

At all stages, Directors are responsible for motivating the team to produce the best possible results. Directors must also always be aware of the constraints of the film's budget and schedule and manage the expectations of the film's financiers.

Knowing where wires are keeps people and equipment safe.In addition to looking after themselves, it’s important that the director looks after all of their cast and crew to make sure that nobody is overly-stressed on set.
A director needs to pace themselves to make sure they aren’t working for too long at a time.

Some directors will only work if they're paid half before the project starts and the rest after the project is complete, so that if the company they're working for goes bust, they have some money to pay the crew. Directors will keep an invoice to keep a record of all of their expenses. an overhead cost or expense. Directors don't pay overhead directly, it's basically a monthly cost on equipment and other expenses. Directors might pay national insurance depending on how much they earn or how big the job is. Directors will have personal insurance on a set in case of an accident. freelance directors will have to open a private pension because they don't work for a company which would set one up for them. Having an accountant to handle finances and help manage income tax and VAT. Directors could make a show reel to promote themselves. They will be friendly towards the people they meet so that they have contacts in case they need crew to work for them on future projects. Directors are given funding by the company to hire the crew to work on the production, or they would have a casting director for it.

Freelance directors work under a fixed-term, freelance contract therefore they will know how long they are required to work for as well as the start and finish date, if they're working short fixed contracts they can be looking for follow up work after their contract has finished. Freelance directors don't get holiday pay or sick pay. Getting commissions is dependent on who you have connections with and who your connections have connections with. some directors will get lawyers to write up consent forms/contracts, because directors are liable for so many people it is important for them to have a lawyer write the contracts so they don't make any mistakes and could be held liable for an incident.
