I think she should speak up, cause unhappiness because the environment and people aren’t helping the situation. She should speak up and be a kill joy cause she shouldn’t suffer at the expense of their jokes. She should fight for her right to feel comfortable to speak up and be heard, women rule .

As a group we chose to speak out. Following principle 2 " I am willing to cause unhappiness" (Ahmed,2017). Exposing the problematic nature of a homophobic or sexist jokes. Allowing for the progressive dialogue to occur , educating the harmful implicates or normalising harmful humor can lead to stopping this toxic behaviour. " To be happy is to be ignorant" (Ahmed, 2017). Unhappiness is the goal of a killjoy and is a by-product of speaking out.

There is no right answer, it can change depending on the person and the situation.

The teenager can try to educate their friends and family about their sexuality, explaining the situation might help mitigate any unsupported bias or opinions. They should feel confidently about their sexuality as the unacceptance of their family and friends should not invalidate their sexuality. They probably shouldn't withdraw as it can have drastic impacts on their mental, emotional and physical health.

Allies can be extremely helpful as they can make them feel seen and heard. They also feel a sense of acceptance which allows them to feel safe. Another ways to make them feel included is to create safe spaces within the school/university environment, groups like LGBTQ+ societies and clubs where they an meet people with similar or same sexualities can help them foster a sense of belonging.

The teenager in question indeed faces immediate misunderstanding and exclusion. by his friends after coming out as Bisexual. This has perhaps occurred due to the psychological nature of heteronormativity in society. As Sarah Ahmed explains, it acts as a societal form of comfort through the extreme normalisation of a socially enforced or engineered habit or behaviour, to the extent that one might not realise it is socially constructed (p.123).

It is of my opinion that the person in question should, if they are comfortable to speak out about their identity and their place in the family and their friend group. It is not the job of the minority to educate those who don't know better or choose to view various sociopolitical matter through the myopic lens of their own self-actualisation.
