Noticed gender in my music

Gender has actually biased the different artist that I listen to. After thinking about it, most of the artist I listen to are females. There are very few male artists that I listen to. I think this is because they are singing about things that I can relate to. Typically, the artist are singing about some boy, a breakup, or just girl empowerment in general. Some of the artist I listen to are Beyonce, Demi Lovato, Camilla Cabello, Jhene Aiko, as well as, Frank Ocean, Chance the Rapper, The Weeknd, and Bruno Mars. I guess the main way I see gender intersecting with each other through music, is when the female artist sings about males and their actions or male artist sing about females and make love songs or sing about breakups as well. I think the music industry is operating this way, because they believe that's the only way they can connect to their audience/fans and keep them listening. In some ways that can be true, because people are going to listen to what they can relate to. I think this is also why we don’t have a lot of female rappers in the industry today, because rap has always been seen as a “male” genre of music. I definitely believe that no specific genre is for any specific gender. I think that artist should be able sing and produce whatever music they want no matter their gender.
