            So, stop beating around the bush, what have I done for this project? At first, I decided to take the Hans Holbeim’s painting called “Les Ambassadeurs” made in one thousand five hundred and thirty-three. The most iconic thing about it is that it owns an anamorphosis towards the feet of the two characters. Apart from that, it looks like a classical painting that represents two types of power: religious and political, together. But we can see something at the bottom that we can’t recognize but that looks like a figurative form. However, if we look in the right way, we can see a skull, which represents death. That is an anamorphosis.

            Then, I must make hypothesis with this reference. At first, I only wanted to make an anamorphosis to the cake that represent a cake, just for creating a mise en abyme. I try a lot of variations to see what is possible but that doesn’t convince me. Consequently, I have chosen to make another board where I make cakes where the anamorphosis is made by the user. That become more enjoyable for him and it’s more interesting for me to make. Thus, the cake doesn’t have to be beautiful but needs to look like a normal cake where I hide an anamorphosis on it, just like the painting I choose.

            After thoughts, I decided to make a cake sliced in different pieces where we can see an anamorphosis if we place it in the right way. So, it must look like a marble cake that we can disassemble to make the picture. I wanted to make it with salt dough because clay cost an arm and a leg and since this material allows me to make a cake that looks literally like a cake. I worked one’s fingers to the bone to make the cake and to paint it and then I make the anamorphosis on the cake with my eyes only, because I don’t have a projector. So, I painted it too and my cake was finished!

                  Finally, I am very satisfied of my cake, and I like the interactive aspect of it. Moreover, I always wanted to make an anamorphosis so it was the first time that I could make it. Except research part, I have liked all the steps of the creation of the cake, and it was enjoyable to make it real

The goal of this projet was to create a cake inspired by the design refrence of our choice. Exactly like those competitions that we can see on TV, were bakers make illusion cakes or other sweets that doesn’t look like it. But, the thing that made this project special is that we had to use clay to create our cakes. In my opinion, this, was the tricky part of this work.

For my cake, I chose to take inspiration on the « shot Marilyn » by Andy Warhol. The main reason why I chose this reference was because I really like design pop and I thought that I could have a really fun time playing with all the colours used for this peace of art. Besides, Marilyn is a personnality that I affectionate personally mainly because of her positive influence on the world.

During my entire creative process, I went through numerous experiments and questions. But, my final choice was made between two main hypotheses.

In the first one, I tought of making a chocolate cake surrounded by Maltesers to represent the polka dot patterns typical of the pop design period.

In this first idea, The Maltersers were supposed to represent the face of Marilyn using the colors of one of the portraits by Warhol. For its part, the shape of the cake had to be square in order to keep the dimensions of the « shot Marilyn ». And, for the second hypotheses, I wanted to make smaller cakes to create a sort of combinaaision of all the coloured portraits of Marilyn. For this, I chose to use Neapolitan. The idea being that each Neapolitan represents a part of Marylin’s face, and that each uses different colors.

For the presentation of the final project, the Neapolitans would be reassembled like a large edible puzzle. My second hypothesis is the one I chose because it allowed me to play more with the colors of the paintings from Andy Warhol's production. Moreover, this hypothesis allowed me to represent an important idea of ​​the artist which is the repetition which creates a distorted image of this personality which is Marilyn.

To realize this hypothesis, I used cardboard for the base of the cake, salt dough for the texture and the sprinkles of sugar, acrylic to color the cakes and finally transparent varnish to create the effect of icing sugar.

For me, this subject was difficult. Indeed, the request seemed a bit contradictory since we had to represent a cake in clay which should not look like a cake, but we had to know that it was a cake. I think this was the biggest difficulty, especially when researching hypotheses. But at the end I liked this project because I had fun making it. Also working on the design reference of my choice was really motivating.

I chose the painting "Three sunflowers in a vase" by Vincent Van Gogh because it's an artist I love and a work I appreciate.

I came up with two ideas for cakes, the first a round puff pastry cake with a glaze that takes up the colors and characteristics of the painting, the second a slice of cake that takes up the aesthetics of the painting and the artist's characteristics as well as a macaroon to represent the sunflower.

To make the cake, I chose the second idea, using self-hardening clay to create separate elements which I then assembled, such as the cake and the macaroon. For the painting style, I took inspiration from the artist's style to paint the exterior elements. I then glued the elements together and varnished the cake to give the effect of icing.

In the end, I'm not really convinced by my cake, which I don't particularly like because it doesn't meet my expectations and has a number of flaws.
