Biasanya terdapat 4 waktu atau situasi yang membolehkan seseorang doktor ataupun individu mendapatkan bacaan kadar gula dalam darah: 

1.    (FBS) Fasting Blood Sugar ataupun ujian yang dilakukan dimana individu tersebut telah berpuasa sekurang2nya 8 jam sebelum ujian dilakukan.
2.    (2HPP) 2-Hour Postprandial Blood Sugar ataupun ujian yang dilakukan terhadap individuan selepas 2jam individu terbabit mula makan. Ujian ini bagi mengetahui keberkesanan pankreas mengeluarkan insulin.
3.    (RBS) Random Blood Sugar atau ujian kadar gula secara rawak ini dilakukan tanpa individu terbabit berpuasa sebelum membuat ujian. Jika bacaan gula dalam darah individu terbabit luar biasa atau terlalu tiggi, kemungkinan besar megidap diabetes. Walau bagaimanapun ujian ini tidak boleh mengesahkan keputusan tersebut. Perlu ujian selanjutnya.
4.    (OGTT) Oral Glucose Tolarance Test. Khas buat ibu2 hamil utk pemeriksaan samada mengidap diabetes atau sebaliknya. Ibu hamil akan diambil sampel darah untuk diuji sebelum dan selepas diberi minum air gula.Diabetes merbahaya untuk ibu hamil.
