Author: Lynne Cox
Read 9/19

This author wrote about the Elephant seal named Elizabeth, and how she lived in a small town. People tried to move Elizabeth to different cities, but she always found her way back. A lesson I could teach from this book, is that everyone has a home. A home might not always be a house, but it is where you are loved and where you love yourself and those around you. Also a point I would make is that even when you leave somewhere you can always go back

Ivan the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla

Author: Katherine Applegate
Read 9/19

This story is about a gorilla who was kidnapped and forced to live inside of a mall, later on in life he was taken to the Atlanta Zoo where he was taught to live with other gorillas. This is story is very educational, because it talks about poachers and how animals can be treated so poorly. I would teach students that all animals should be treated with kindness and respect. Also that just because you want a certain type of animal does not mean that, that animal should live in your home environment. You have to think about the animals and how they are going to live.

Author: Gail Gibbons
Read 9/19

This book is perfect for fourth or fifth grade when they are learning about different types of weather. This story is all about informing children about tornadoes and what they are exactly. This book is great for teaching students about how dangerous tornados are and that they should be taken very seriously. This book goes into great detail about how past tornados and the damage that was done. A lesson I would teach about this book is all about tornados and the catastrophic events that happen because of them.

Author: Claire Rudolf Murphy
Read 9/19

This song not only gives history about the song "My Country 'tis of Thee," but also on history of the struggles that were happening in the country durning the time. This story talks about women rights, and slavery. This book is great for fifth graders during a history lesson over the United States. A lesson I would teach about this book is that this country has always had its struggles and still does, but that does not mean that we stop working on our future. I would instruct students to stay positive even through the struggles they might be facing in their own life.

Author: Ann Turner
Read: 9/19
Grade:5th grade

I would read this book to fifth graders, because it is about an ex slave, who runs away to find a better life. Along the way she must be brave and courageous to find her way. The lesson I would teach from this book is that if you don't like the situation you are in, or when you are holder and have job you don't like, you must be brave and try to change your own life. You must work hard for what you want just like Sojourner Truth did in this book. This would be a great book to read during a history lesson when we are learning about slavery.

Author: Rachel Rodriguez
Read: 9/20
Grade: 5th grade

This would be a great book to read to a class when we learn about different types of art. This book is an encouraging book to let students know that anything is possible if they believe in themselves. In this book Georgia wants to be an artist, but at the time only boys can be artist. Although women were not allowed to be artist she still continued her work and her dream of one day becoming a great artist. She listened to her heart and everything she saw. She believed in herself and kept working. This is a lovely story to share to inspire students to work for what they want in life.

Author: Bruce Bednarchuk
Read: 9/20
Grade: 2nd grade

I loved this book! This book was written as a poem and tells the story of Rosa Parks standing for what she believed in and on every other page it reiterates what she did. I would read this book during a history lesson over our rights and the Civil Rights Movement. This book will give the students a tiny glimpse as to what the United States used to be like and much we have changed and grown.

When Thomas Edison Fed Someone Worms

Author: Mark Weakling
Read: 9/21
Grade: 3rd grade
This book is all about Thomas Edison and his inventions. The book talks about how he started all of his experiments by asking questions and by being curious. I would read this story to my class during a science lesson, because it shows students that its okay to ask questions and make observations. I would let students know that asking questions is the best way to learn, because you are thinking and then wondering about the things you do not know. Asking questions is how we discover new information to help our learning experience.

Author: Steve Jenkins
Read: 9/19
Grade: K-5

I think that this book can be read to any grade level in elementary schools, because it is the perfect book to read when going to the zoo. This book talks all about what not to do to certain animals. It teaches about safety and how we should respect the animals. This book was very educational, because it talks about the animals and why we should try to touch or mess with them. The lesson I would teach from this book is that we have to treat animals with respect, because they do not like to be messed with. Just like we have to treat our classmates and friends with respect because we do not like to be touched and messed with either.

Author: Gail Gibbons
Read: 9/19
Grade: Any science class

This is a perfect book for a science class that is learning about insects. The book talks about all the parts of the ladybug and what they do and why the ladybug needs them. This book introduces all the different kinds of ladybugs and where they live and how they help us. I would read this book to my students to show that this itty bitty bug has a job to do and is special in its own way. I would tell the students that there is nothing to big for them to do, just look at the little ladybug! It is so special and so unique just by being itself.
