- Learn what they're reading at home (other language may be organized differently - R->L, symbols, etc)
-Interpret miscues (leaving 's' off is grammatical but not content error)
-Large Scale Assessments -- do the students understand what is being asked?
- Explicitly teach word patterns and parts
-Teach decoding even if oral is not yet proficient
