The United States crushed the rebellion, but many lives were lost on both sides. Later, the US began growing and investing in sugar cane crops on the Hawaiian Islands. American businessmen launched an overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani and were successful. The United States eventually annexed Hawaii to the country in 1898.

Exploratory goals were to map new territory, locate indigenous/native people, and to identify natural resources available. Political goals were to claim land for the "mother country," make sure their country had more resources than others, and to control another country's government. Idealogical reasons were to improve non-Europeans' way of life to make them more like Europeans and to make Non-Europeans adopt a European perspective. Religious reasons were to convert native people to Christianity, convince native people that their religion is wrong or evil, and and to change beliefs of the next generation.
