M. Block answers in the affirmative to the question of whether history is a true science, defining true sciences as those capable of establishing logical connections between phenomena instead of a simple incoherent enumeration of phenomena and events - thus taking the position of antagonist of the positivist conception of history.

The subject of historical research, according to Blok, is man in time. The author proceeds from the fact that human consciousness is not unified over time, but changes under the influence of certain factors

The "apology of history" on which Blok worked in 1941-1942 bears the imprint of that tragic time. By his own admission, the book arose as an "antidote" in which he "among the terrible sufferings and anxieties, personal and social," tried to "find a little peace of mind." Addressing L. Fevre, Blok remarked: “For a long time we fought together to make history broader and more humane. Now, as I write this, our common cause is in many dangers. Not our fault. We are temporarily defeated by an unjust fate. However, I am sure that the day will come when our cooperation will be able to fully resume, as in the past, openly and, as in the past, freely.
