Grimes - "Kill V. Maim"

This is a great music video, especially when looking at the use of costume and props. The style is cartoonish and eccentric, giving it a distinct aesthetic - something Grimes shoots for throughout her work. There is a lot of colour, but not a lot of "classy" looks - it's rough, wild, uncontrollable, which is appropriate for a music video for a song as high-energy as this one.

There are so many props in this video, but as they're usually attached to certain characters, we only see them in the backdrop/occasionally taking up the whole frame. This high amount of stylised props is rare, because music videos are rarely this striking in terms of general aesthetic, so there is less of a need for them.

There are four locations in this music video - the subway station, the futuristic city road, the club, and the shelf-room (I don't really know how I'd describe it). Again, these are incredibly dirty-looking and rough, and purposefully so. There's a certain air of unpredictability to it, mirroring the song's construction & themes.

Final Thoughts on Props/Costumes/Locations

Ultimately, any prop/costume/location can be good for a music video, but it depends on the style you wish to capture. Something like "Kill V. Maim" is going for a very particular & surreal futuristic aesthetic, which means that the run-down subway station & neon cityscape are appropriate for the artist's vision. Another genre of music might not have use for either of those things and might wish to shoot for realism, meaning that many elements of "Kill V. Maim" would be inappropriate. As with all creative tools, how effective they are is predicated on the context within which they're used.
