How does the image of the frontier compare with the reality of pioneer life as described in the chapter?

The legend of the frontiers made it seem as if they were always excited and on the move, and that they'd complete the move triumphantly. However life for the frontiers was downright grim for most pioneer families. They suffered from diseases, depression, and premature death. Women often times were lonely. People had breakdowns and the frontier life was tough.

Why was transportation—particularly the canals and the railroads—so important in the early stages of industrialization?

Waterborne commerce was slow, uncertain, and dangerous. Stagecoaches and wagons weren't study for the bone-shaking roads. Thus with the invention of the Steamboat and turnpike it allowed products to get to places much quicker and the turnpike was able to return 15% of annuals dividends to its' stockholders.

Which technological innovation was most important for early-nineteenth-century economic development?

I believe that the Steamboat was the most important innovation for the early nineteenth-century economy. The Steamboat allowed for trade to happen much quicker was able to travel further in less time. The innovation of the Steamboat helped increased transcontinental trade, and not by land which also had its problems from roads being to rocky and land being too muddy.

What effects did the movement from a subsistence to a market economy have on American society, including farmers, laborers, and women? What were the advantages and disadvantages of the change?

The Market Revolution changed the subsistence economy of scattered farms and tiny networks into a national network of industry and commerce. Farms expanded, and with the booming of factories, laborers and women were able to find more jobs in factories. However the Market Revolution brought long hours, low wages and workers toiled in unsanitary buildings

In this chapter, the authors maintain that “clearly the early factory system did not shower its benefits evenly on all.” What relevant historical evidence can you find in this chapter or the previous ones that supports, modifies, or refutes this assertion?

While women held jobs in factories it was still unusual, therefore having fewer opportunities to be economically self-supporting. Free slaves were also not able to obtain a job, thus not playing a factor in social society. The demand for immigrants appeared to be troublesome when there weren't always enough jobs and with immigrants came the fear that they were taking the Americans' jobs.

Progressively has time as increased the center population as moved from the East to the Midwest. The nonwhite population has also seen a significant increase. During this time period, the Irish and Germans were the predominant immigrants and from 1831-1860 their population had increased to being in the 900,000 range respectively. With the innovation of new technology, such as, the steamboat, turnpike, cotton gin, and factories themselves, there was increase demand in jobs which made the population of the Irish and Germans further increase in the following years.
