In the book in chapter 27, WWII is in full effect the Japanese are being put off into multiple internment camps as implied by how the Japanese are disappearing. This quote further explains this..."The Yakamoto Sea Food Market quietly became Sammy's Shoe shine parlor and Smoke Shop."

Throughout the whole book many things are displaced due to segregation. One example is back in Stamps, the north and south part of stamps was split and even if you were black and rich you would still be confined to the southern part of town where luxuries were less abundant. This quote further explains it "People in Stamps used to say that the whits in our town were so prejudiced that a negro couldn't buy vanilla ice cream."

In the book, it is very apparent that the kids were sent to stamps due to the divorce that tore their parents apart and destroyed their marriage. This quote explains it, "Our parents had decided to put an end to their calamitous marriage, and father shipped us home to his mother
