Definition: There is a belief that if something is “all natural”, it is healthy and free of chemicals, making it good for you. The reality is that just because something is “all natural” does not mean that it is healthy – cyanide is all natural, and it is deadly to humans.

An example of this is this website that lists the benefits of essential oils. This site actually has several red flags – mentions of ideology, of ancient wisdom, proof of verbosity – and the site itself is bogged down with ads and pop ups. That aside, this article drones on for many paragraphs about the quality of essential oils, the variety of uses in “holistic medicine”, and its “healing powers”. There isn’t a single reference to actual scientific research to back any of these claims, and yet the author is discussing how beneficial these oils are to one’s health.

Definition: People are more susceptible to believing in the validity of something if it is presented with perceived authority. If something is presented or supported by someone with a long list of credentials or a high status, such as a doctor or university professor, people are led to believe that something is scientifically backed and official.

Dr. Oz is a practitioner that has achieved fame through his show, the Dr. Oz Show, which is produced by Oprah. He has come under fire many times over the years for promoting pseudoscience with no evidence behind it, while utilizing his position to influence the masses. One such issue is his promotion of “faith healing” as a treatment – there is no scientific validity behind this healing, however because of his position of power, he is able to convince people of its existence.

Definition: When something is presented with an onslaught of scientific-sounding terminology and buzzwords, people can be duped to thinking that something is scientifically backed and genuine. Even if the terminology is made up or used in a combination that is technically nonsensical, at first sight it gives an air of being official.

This segment from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is a great watch and discusses how many media outlets report false information as “science”, publishing whatever outlandish things they can in order to generate traffic regardless of how harmful it can be. Because people are bombarded by these terrifying claims and jumbles of scientific-sounding jargon, they are led to believe that they are genuine dangers.

Definition: The belief that there is some sort of “universal energy” that, when we accept it and let it “flow through us”, we can connect to the universe and experience healing. The actual scientific definition of energy is the capacity for something to do work and is a quantitative property, however its utilization regarding mystical energy is meaningless.

Reiki is a type of “healing” that is meant to channel “universal energy” through the palms of a practitioner to the patient in the interest of performing healing. This video was posted by a practitioner claiming that by listening to the video and allowing the energy to flow through you, you will clear financial blocks in your life and this will allow you to make more money. This practitioner has an ulterior motive of selling her services, however hides it behind the idea of mystical energy healing her patients.

Definition: Just because two things are occurring at once does not mean that one causes the other. For example, vaccinations – it is an upcoming trend to believe that vaccines cause autism, regardless of the fact that the doctor who published these results admitted to faking the results and has since had his license removed. There is no actual scientific link between the two, but because someone put the increase in prevalence of both together on a graph, people are believing that vaccines are harmful.

This is a comic that greatly outlines the whole issue with anti-vaxxers, including the origins of their beliefs that vaccines cause autism and its evolution since. As the increase of both vaccine use and autism has gone up (due to growing populations and broader diagnoses of the autism spectrum) and a self-serving doctor claimed them to be related, this harmful movement has gained momentum and is spreading.

Definition: As humans, we experience emotions such as grief in a very strong way. If something is appealing to our emotional connection in order to sell it to us – for example, a psychic can speak to a deceased loved one – we are more willing to believe in it.

This article discusses “how to recognize signs from your loved ones in heaven”. The author writes about seemingly mundane life occurrences and assigns meaning to them, such as noticing feelings, shapes, symbols, numbers, etc that would have meaning connecting to your loved ones. This author has YouTube videos as well as a podcast, and offers “readings” for a fee.

Definition: Oftentimes, the scientific explanation behind things we experience are long, hard to understand, and sometimes hard to envision (for example, the rate of coincidences). Instead, the simplest answers are the easiest to grasp and believe in, even if they are not actually correct.

John Henry Fuseli’s painting, The Nightmare, which depicts a woman sleeping and immobile with an incubus sitting on her chest. Sleep paralysis is a condition that many people (myself included) suffer through in which your body lingers between a state of wakefulness and total-body paralysis, which is a part of the sleep process. During this state, you are prone to terrifying hallucinations, often seeing ghosts or demons who are sitting on your chest or attacking you while you struggle to wake up. The simple explanation for sleep paralysis is a demon sitting on you, as depicted here.

Definition: The things we see and experience feel like hard facts to us, and it is hard to argue that something that we have experienced is incorrect, or has another explanation. We are so sure in what we have experienced that confronting the idea that what we are so sure of is not correct is disturbing, and we are unwilling to consider it.

This image shows how two people can look at the same thing, and yet observe it in a different way. We can be so sure that we have seen or experienced something as that is the way we have connected it in our minds, and yet reality can be very different.
