Visual appearance
Swahili women generally wear brightly colored and patterned rectangular cotton cloths called kanga. Women will cut a kanga in half, wrapping one half around their waist like a skirt, and the other half around their shoulders and head (as a Muslim head covering). Men weara striped cloth (kikoi) around the waist that hangs to the knees.

Religion/beliefs
The Swahili are predominantly Muslim. However, before the arrival of Islam, the Swahili worshiped according to the traditions of their ancestors. They believed in 'Mungu', God who is the creator of the universe, to whom they prayed directly.

Rituals
Swahili life comprised of rites and ceremonies, which are based on Islam (birth, marriage and death). Weddings and holiday celebrations are the most important forms of entertainment. Several women's dance groups perform at weddings for all-female audiences. They dance chakacha, which resembles belly dancing, and also lelemama, a very subtle dance with tiny hand movements.

Food
Rice cooked with coconut milk has traditionally been a staple food for the Swahili. Their meals incorporate locally available vegetables, fruits, and spices served with tea several times a day. Fish is also central in the diet, while chicken and goat meat are popular for holiday meals.

History
For at least a thousand years, Swahili people have occupied a narrow strip of coastal land extending from the north coast of Kenya to Dar es Salaam (the capital of Tanzania). They also occupy several nearby Indian Ocean islands.
Over the past few hundred years, the coastal area has been conquered and colonized several times—by Portuguese in the sixteenth century, by Middle Eastern Arabs who ran a slave trade, and by the British in the twentieth century. Thus, Swahili people are accustomed to living with strangers in their midst, and they have frequently acted as middlemen in trade relations. In addition, they have incorporated many people and practices into their vibrant social world.
