Night by Elie Wiesel is about a Jewish teenager who is sent to a concentration camp called Auschwitz. Throughout the book, Elie loses hope, faith, and strength in fighting to escape the camp.

Reading what this boy has gone through shows people what life was like as a Jewish during the holocaust. How hard it was to get separated from your loved ones. You could feel the emotion of the characters as they watched people die, and suffered from travel and hunger.

Both books Copper Sun by Sharon M. Draper, and Night by Elie Wiesel describe the pain of abuse, death, and finding your way back home. As Copper Sun was about slavery and traveling to Fort Mose, Night was about fighting through the concentration camps and rejoicing with family.

The characters in both books go through many difficult times throughout their journey for freedom.

“NEVER SHALL I FORGET that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed. Never shall I forget that smoke. Never shall I forget the small faces of the children whose bodies I saw transformed into smoke under a silent sky. Never shall I forget those flames that consumed my faith forever...Never shall I forget those moments that murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes. Never shall I forget those things, even were I condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never.” (Pg 34)

"He had felt that his father was growing weak, he had believed that the end was near and had sought this separation in order to get rid of the burden, to free himself from an encumbrance which could lessen his own chances of survival."(Pg 91)

This video explains how people suffered during Transatlantic Slave Trade and explains the horrors. The video points out the history and how slavery was a terrible reminder of suffering injustice and loss, it is also the story of a victorious struggle against oppression and for freedom: a quest to fulfill our universal human rights just like the book explains.

This is a song and an interview from Ervin Webb who sang the song and his group. Lots of slaves would sing songs to tell each other what was going on and gives others ideas- possibly of escaping. This song is made especially for that as they sing "I'm goin' home, oh yes" This is an idea of freedom, escaping, and returning home not on the plantations but to a place where they are not slaves. This relates to the book because on page number 125 it says: "Sometimes she heard bits of their conversations and voices singing late into the midnight hours. "Why do you think they sing?" Polly whispered one hot, humid night as they listened to the somber songs drift through the window. "Songs float up to the sky- fly free..." This quote shows that people sang to each other and were giving them hope of freedom.

"Under the upper level of boards a second level had been constructed, and under that, a third. Each row of shelves held men--human beings---chained like animals and stacked like logs for the fire, row after row, shelf after shelf."(43) This happens when Amari enters the ship, and she sees men laying on shelves with barely enough headroom. This is about the Transatlantic Slave Trade(Middle Passage) which is a real-life event. Slaves were given limited space and went through intolerable conditions. This is an accurate historical event that is displayed in our book.

I do believe that the experiences that Amari had experienced were the experiences that mostly every slave went through. As most slaves believed freedom was North, many thought like Amari and went south to find Fort Mose(Moh-Say). Traveling in both directions was very tough. You had to make sure you couldn't be traced, and only travel during the night, never the day. Finding food and staying safe was very hard while traveling because they had no money or shelter.

Despite Amari being torn apart from her home and experiencing many terrible things, she never gave up when looking for freedom even when sometimes she wished she did. Sharon writes, "Because as long as we have life, we have hope!" (19) and "It would be so much easier to give up and die. Yet she could not do that."(48)
