When you turn 18 you are allowed to do things such as vote, enter into a contract, join the service, work full time, buy tobacco, etc. You have to even by law put your name in in case there is a draft: "If you are a male, you are required to register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of turning 18. According to the law, www.sss.gov/default.htm, you can be prosecuted if you do not register. If convicted, you can be fined up to $250,000 and/or spend up to five years in jail.". You are able to also consent to sex and in some states the age of consent is 16 to 17: "The federal government has established 18 as the age of consent to legally engage in sexual activities with another person aged 18 or older. The age of consent may be younger or older according to your state’s law." The fact that your a adult when your 18 haunts me. I think the age of adulthood should be changed.

Rumspringa is when teens that are 16 years or age go out into the modern world and experience parties, fast cars, and sex. A documentary about Rumspringa was so interesting even the name made it sound a bit scary: "To Be or Not To Be Amish had its beginnings in the research done for the documentary film Devil's Playground.". Another interesting part of Rumspringa is one of its activities: "In a window visible from the lane, they position a lit gas lamp, and they leave open an adjacent side door to the house and stairway. These are signals to male Amish youth out "cruising" that there are young ladies inside who would welcome a visit". I think this experience would be a nice thing to have if you grew up being Amish, it gives teens a chance to see the modern world for what it is and it also gives them the choice of staying in the modern world if they so choose to.
