You would start with a small whole group lesson (7-10 minutes) and then break out into the daily five groups. Students can do one rotation or all, depending on age and stamina. Usually, the older students stick to two rounds that are a bit longer, and younger students do three shorter rounds.

This idea is super handy and quick. You pick groups of students, most likely based on reading level. Then you spin the wheel to determine what they do. If this were my classroom, I would spin the wheel for every rotation.

After the Daily 5 is over, many teachers choose to have their students share what they did during their daily five. To save time, this would be effective when paired with a Kagan structure like a turn-and-talk.

When first introducing this, you have to model much more than you would probably think. When you set students up to be successful independently, they will be more motivated to work on their own. Excess modeling will help students know what is expected of them and the correct way to complete tasks from the get go.
