Yalta Conference 1945

The Yalta Conference was a pivotal World War II meeting between the leaders of the Allied Powers. During the meeting they discussed how they were going to reorganize Europe, the fate of Germany, and the establishment of the United Nations. These issues also established the roots for the Cold War during the 1950s.

Marshall Plan 1947

The Marshall Plan was an American led recovery process used to rebuild Europe after WWII. It also was used to urge those countries who were stabilized by the initiative to help prevent the spread of communism.

La Violencia, Columbia 1948

La Violencia was a period of time experienced in Columbia due to political differences. The two parties who sparked this period of violence were the Colombian Conservative Party and the Colombian Liberal Party. The riots that occurred resulted in the deaths of over 200,000 people.

Israel established 1948

Established on May 14, 1948 Israel marked the first Jewish state in 2,000 years. The establishment of Israel led to immediate conflict with surrounding Arab countries. This eventually led to future conflict in the Middle East as well.

NATO formed 1949

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed on April 4, 1949. Its primary goal was to protect the countries which made up their members. If one country was attacked it was declared that the other countries were to wage war against the country that attacked. This therefore connected all the countries which could lead to a domino effect.

People’s Republic of China formed 1949

Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in 1949 from Tiananmen Square in Beijing. This followed the Chinese Communist Party's Victory in the Chinese Civil War. This caused a future threat and plotted America and China against each other today.

Korean War 1950-1953

In 1950-1953 the conflict between North Korea and South Korea became known as the Korean War. It began when North Korea attacked South Korea. It ended with an armistice with no formal treaty. The war resulted in an estimated 2-3 million deaths.

Armas Stages Coup to Control Guatemala, 1954

Carlos Castillo Armas led a coup to overthrow the democratically elected president, Jacobo Arbenz. Armas' rise to power marked the beginning of a series of U.S backed authoritarian regimes in Guatemala.

Warsaw Pact, 1955

Signed in Warsaw, Portland, the Warsaw Pact sought to balance out the power NATO possessed. Made up of all communist countries its purpose aimed to solidify Soviet influence over Eastern Europe during the Cold War.

Soviet Union Invaded Hungary, 1956

When the Soviet Union invaded Hungary they sought to diminish the Hungarian Revolution, an uprising against Soviet control. The suppression resulted in thousands of deaths and the exile of close to a quarter-million Hungarians.

Cuban Revolution, 1959

June 11, 1963: Alabama governor George Wallace attempts to block students from registering at the University of Alabama

Description: Alabama governor George Wallace stands in the doorway of the University of Alabama to prevent two black students from enrolling.

Effect: This made President Kennedy use the national guard to force George Wallace to let them enroll. He also made new laws regarding black education.

Effect: Rosa Parks is now an icon for Civil Rights and had also inspired other to stand up by sitting down.

February 1, 1960: First sit-in at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C.

Effect: The result of this was that it helped public spaces become desegregated.

April 3 - May 10 1963: Police arrest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Effect: Martin Luther King wrote his inspiring "Letters From a Birmingham Jail".

August 28, 1963: Martin Luther King gives “I Have a Dream” Speech at the March on Washington

Effect: Martin Luther King Jr. gave hope that change is possible.

July 2, 1964: President Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Description: Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prevents discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, or race.

Effect: It became one of the biggest landmarks in American history.

February 21, 1965: Civil Rights leader Malcolm X is murdered

Description: Malcolm X believed in a violent approach to achieve change. When he came back from a religious trip his views changed and he was assassinated for believing in a more peaceful approach to Civil Rights.

Effect: Others were tempted to try violence as a way to promote change.

August 6, 1965: President Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Description: In 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the voting Rights Act of 1965 which gives the right to vote to black people and prevents poll taxes, literacy tests, or physical intimidation to be used to prevent people from voting.

Effect: Any legal U.S citizen is allowed to vote if they are of age.

April 4, 1968: Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated

Description: On April 4th, 1968 MLK was assassinated when walking outside his hotel in the early morning.

Effect: People looked to others for someone to help inspire change like Martin Luther King.
