Directions:
Upload your two final photos to the wall. Above each photo write the following:
Your Name, Title of Work, Size, & Date.
Next, include your artist statement:
Write an artist statement in paragraph form (5-8 sentences) that conveys your creative processes, products, and meaning of your series. Things you can include:
What did your creative process look like? ( idea generation strategies/ research, etc.)
How did you use both visual and physical planning strategies to help make your vision come to life in each of the two portraiture photos?
What do you feel was most successful? What do you feel was a learning experience for you?
What would your like to explore next in your photography journey?

Once you have uploaded your work, view your classmates work and provide feedback through compliments, questions, and constructive criticism. Don't forget to use your art vocabulary!

Beam
5x7
2022

Artist Statement for both:

The process of taking my indoor and outdoor photos had its difficulties, but I’m pleased with the outcome. Both photos being of my brother I had to guide him on how to pose in order to display the look I wanted to give viewers.

First for my indoor photo I wanted to take one at a window with the sun beaming. At first the posing was awkward but then I thought of having my brother put his hand up in a way to look like he’s shielding himself from the sun. After a bit of angle adjustments I decided to take a photo closer to his face in order to make it more like a portrait. I found doing this displayed what I wanted better, making the pose look more natural.

Then for my outdoor photo I let my brother choose a pose he wanted. The only criteria was I wanted a photo where I’d stand a bit farther from him but he’ll still be focused in. He moved to many different angles before choosing to stand to the side as a main pose. Which I believe gave the photo a chill vibe that I liked.

In the end, I believe the vibe I wanted to give the photos were most successful in my process, because they display 2 vibes really differently. A learning experience I had was how angles can really affect how the photo is viewed. I would like to explore photos containing props next time.

The only physical documentation I have of my creative process was the idea generator assignment. the rest of the creative process took place in my head and the visual and physical planning strategies help make your vision come to life by. Not limiting me to what I feel was easiest available as in like space. I think the most successful area of my photos was the photos not being super blurry. Most or almost all of my previous photos came out painfully blurry so I think that was the most successful thing about my photos. one thing that was a learning experience for me while taking and revising my photos was that. A good amount of physical or mental planning should go into the planning of a photo's composition so in my next photography journey I would like to work more on having a neet composition.

2022
For this assignment we had to focus on portraitures. I wanted to convey a sense of calamity in both of my pictures. For my outdoor photo I wanted the space to seem familiar, so I chose the park near my house that both my friend and I know well. I wanted her body language to seem friendly for my original outdoor picture so I had her smiling with her arms crossed, a very commonly used pose so others would feel a sense of familiarity too. My original indoor pictures didn’t turn out unfortunately, so I had to use an outdoor one. I chose one where there’s still a sense of calamity but the mood is a little more serious. I didn’t want her looking at the camera, but looking away. I’m very pleased with the way these different pictures turned out and although the lighting is similar different moods are portrayed.

In this unit I explored the rabbit hole of indoor/ outdoor portraiture. My subject for this unit was my eldest brother. For idea generation this unit I researched things such as mood/emotion shown in portraits, lighting /shadows in portraiture ect. Some ideas that I had while conducting my various research for outdoor portraits was the use of things in nature to add shadows in my photos, for example the shade from trees or flowers. Some ideas that I had while conducting my various research for indoor portraits was the use of the window border or curtains to add shadow to my photos.I used visual and physical planning strategies by planning on days to take my photos for good lighting and good weather for the indoor and outdoor photos and by selecting specific places with lots of natural lighting and space to take my photos. One thing that I think was most successful in my indoor and outdoor photos was the balance of light and dark contrast in my photos. One thing that I think was a big learning experience for me was the planning of what I wanted my photos to look like beforehand. I'm really not sure what I want to explore next in photography.

Outdoor Artist Statement:

When thinking of different ways to capture the photo I wanted I had to get the lighting right where I wanted it. There is a funny story behind this photo where we had to run down the street to capture the light that came from in-between the tall trees covering the sun. I first put a bunch of ideas I wanted on a piece of paper and looked through them to see which ones I will be able to take that day. Once I found a couple I went outside to start capturing photos until I finally got one that shared my sisters glowing smile! I feel like the most successful part of taking this photo was for it to come out how I wanted it to. I wasn't quite sure if this one would look better than another I had in mind but it came out great! I learned that planning before taking the photo really helps with the outcome you wanted. Next, I would like to try getting an action shot of their back. For example, someone running away from the camera. So you would only get their backs in every shot.

Indoor Artist Statement:

When I first started coming up with ideas for this photo I wanted the viewer to not make eye contact with the person in the photo that I wanted to capture. I wanted them too find out what they thought she was feeling and use their own imagination to figure out her emotionless face. I also only wanted half of her face to have most of the light shining onto it and I think it came out pretty good for that part, which is what I think I was successful on. I learned a lot about the different lighting you need and where you'd need to take the picture depending on the time of day. It was a bit hard for me to figure out where I should take this photo but it ended up being the bathroom! I would like to see if I could do the opposite of a portrait next and instead of getting all the features of someone's face I would get the rim lighting of it.

The thought process I'd say I had trying to take the "perfect" indoor and outdoor photos was that it was going to be maybe a little challenging because since having to only use Natural Lighting, I had to think when might be the best time to take pictures and also the weather conditions. Some days rain, gloomy, some the perfect lighting for photos. My creative process during the time being would have to be how can I use my surroundings around me to create the perfect indoor outdoor photos. With that being said, personally I really liked my outdoor photo, being able to have my cousin model when using the chandler of the hummingbirds and being able to have him stand behind it, and the detail of the wings being shown. With my indoor photo of my niece, with her being fussy it was a little hard but overall I think it catches her facial expression nicely. What I've learned was that I need to have better time management skills when it comes to being able to turn these assignments in on time, or being able to use photography as a way to express things like emotion or being able to use the materials and angles you have around you correctly.

“A Queen” comes from the photos that I took indoors with my friend Queensley. Rehearsals for Oakland Mills High School Musical were happening on the days that I needed photos. Before rehearsal began, I asked Ms Hoffin if I would be able to use the stage as a location for a quick photo of my friend Queensley who 100% agreed to work with me and make great portraits. The stage was perfect with lighting because lights were set up for Act I, Scene I of the musical. I set her up on stage and got on one knee to get a better angle of Queensley’s full face. I told her to look off into the distance a bit and cross her arms. Before I took the photo I came to the conclusion that her face was too serious. I decided to remind her of an inside joke we have and then she bursted out a giggle. The laugh made the photo better which led me to snap the shot! I got a photo with deep meaning behind the scenes.

I was walking around the school looking for ideas. I asked him to do a quick strut which was so hilarious I didn't even get a chance to snap a photo of it since I was laughing. He did another quick catwalk as he was walking into class again and I told him to turn his head around and pose. It was so perfect and I got his good angle! Nothing but model vibes coming from this image, I just had to pick this for the final.

I wanted to get the Adidas and the Nike logo cause I feel like they are both really popular. I also wanted to get a model who could make it seem like it was taken for a tv commercial. My process was trying to find a place that had good lighting but it also had some shadows. I feel like everything about it was successful because of the way that my model is posing, the way the sun is hitting one side of his face and there is a shadow on the other side of his face. I'd love to keep taking pictures of more people just to explore more poses, maybe use more people in the frame and bring in some props. ~Erica

I was difficult for me because I ended up doing all of this today, taking the shot was diffcult since the only Natural Lighting was the sun and later it began to raining after taking this shot. Since I had the idea of taking a photo with a confident, relaxed, nature look. I took this picture near where I live, the neighborhood is mostly surround by trees, Luckily there were two huge boulders that I used. I asked my sister to do a kneeling pose, consistancy to not look at the camera. Her facial expression gives a serious, confident look. I have taken different shots of her but ultimately this was my favorite. I have learned that time management is key.
