"Syukur kepada Tuhan. Buat pertama kali dalam tempoh 88 tahun, masjid akan mengalu-alukan orang beriman untuk solat Tarawih pada Ramadan ini," kata Ali Erbas ketua Diyanet, badan awam yang bertanggungjawab menyelia ibadat.

Walaupun bangunan ikonik itu, yang sebelum ini digunakan sebagai muzium, diubah menjadi masjid pada 2020, wabak Covid-19 menghalang solat di sana sehingga kini.

Ia bukan kali pertama bangunan itu menukar penggunaannya.

Bangunan itu mula-mula dibina sebagai katedral Kristian antara 532 dan 537 AD di bawah maharaja Justinian I dan dianggap sebagai struktur Byzantine yang paling penting.

Selepas penaklukan Uthmaniyyah ke atas Constantinople (kini Istanbul) pada tahun 1453, ia telah ditukar menjadi masjid sebelum dibuka sebagai muzium pada tahun 1935 selepas republik Turki moden sekular ditubuhkan pada tahun 1923.

Ia telah ditambahkan ke senarai tapak warisan dunia Unesco pada tahun 1985.

Pada Jun 2020, pihak berkuasa Turki menukar Hagia Sophia kembali menjadi masjid, satu langkah yang mencetuskan gelombang kritikan antarabangsa.

"Saya akan saksikan, insya-Allah detik indah ini dengan mengimamkan solat Tarawih yang pertama," katanya.

Solat itu akan diadakan di Hagia Sophia pada Jumaat, Sabtu dan Ahad sepanjang Ramadan, mulai minggu ini, kata Diyanet.
