"I protect Prim in every way I can, but I'm powerless against the reaping. The anguish I always feel when she's in pain wells up in my chest and threatens to register on my face."(Pg.15)

This part is around the start of the reaping, which is an event where candidates are picked to be a part of the violent hunger games. Prim, Katniss's younger sister is at the age to be able to be picked and Katniss is extremely worried that Prim could be chosen and is hoping that the situation of which would never happen.

The quote resembles Katniss's heart and protective bond she has with her sister and showed how truly worried she was for not only herself but especially Prim who was now eligible to be picked. Katniss knew there was not much she could do to protect Prim and that broke her heart. She wanted to always ensure Prim's safety and continues to try and protect Prim in every way possible.

The other kids make way immediately allowing me a straight path to the stage. I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. 'I volunteer!' I gasp. 'I volunteer as tribute!'"(Pg.22)

Katniss was entirely too scared when Prim was pulled as the tribute name and was in distress that the worst case scenario had just happened. She decided that she needed to save Prim in any way possible and volunteered as tribute, something really brave and insane to do.

Katniss was being very brave and fearless deciding to volunteer herself as tribute to make sure that she could protect Prim in any way she could. She was scared and worried about how Prim would be and sacrificed herself instead of Prim.

"I stared at the loaves in disbelief. They were fine, perfect really, except for the burned areas. Did he mean for me to have them? He must have. Because there they were at my feet. Before anyone could witness what had happened I shoved the loaves up under my shirt, wrapped the hunting jacket tightly about me, and walked swiftly away. The heat of the bread burned into my skin, but I clutched it tighter, clinging to life.(pg 31)"

Katniss and her family were extremely struggling at the time and were poor and unable to afford proper food and could not hunt any. The bread that Peeta had tossed was really important and an unforgettable moment for Katniss and her family.

Though the burned bread was just supposed to be given to the pigs, Peeta felt bad for Katniss and wanted to make sure her and her family were fed so he threw them a freshly baked loaf that was only just burned, the rest of it perfectly kind. This reflects on Peeta's kindness and his giving heart that went out of his way to give Katniss a loaf even though he could have got into big trouble.

"I don't bother suggesting Prim to learn to hunt. I tried to teach her a couple of times and it was disastrous. The woods terrified her, and whenever I shot something, she'd get teary and talk about how we might be able to heal it if we got it home soon enough. But she makes out well with her goat, so I concentrate on that.(pg 35)"

After Katniss volunteers and is chosen as a tribute in the games, the messages and everything that needs to happen after tributes are chosen is gone through. Katniss is reunited with Prim for a short period for goodbyes where she is able to talk to Prim and her mother. She is warning Prim about everything she will need to do and is making sure they will both be safe during Katniss's absence.

Not only was Prim so amazing and kind to the point where Katniss immediately volunteered as a tribute, but even after Katniss is thinking about how pure and innocent Prim is and is scared of how Prim will do on her own. Prim has so much kindness and love that even hurting an animal is horrid for her and this shows the amount of importance and space Prim takes up of Katniss's worries.

She felt a fear she never felt before and was truly worried for the games. Very validly, as the games are soon to start.

She was wondering why Haymitch was not sending any water as a sponsor gift when she realized he was trying to send a message to her.

Katniss was really struggling and was wondering why she wasn't being given any sponsor gifts. She was smart and realized that Haymitch was basically communicating with her when she does and doesn't get gifts. This shows how quick Katniss is to understand subtle hints and shows how clever she is. She was able to understand what Haymitch meant by just the subtlest of hints and was able to use that to her advantage.

"My eyes follow the line of her finger up into the foliage above me. At first, I have no idea what she's pointing to, but then, about fifteen feet up, I make out the vague shape in the dimming light. But ... of what? Some sort of animal? It looks about the size of a racoon, but it hangs from the bottom of a branch, swaying ever so slightly. There's something else. Among the familiar evening sounds of the woods, my ears register a low hum. Then I know. It's a wasp nest"(185)

Katniss has been found by the career but for now was safe up in a tree but she was in danger of something she didn't even know herself. Rue, who was sneakily there in the trees without anyone noticing her was helping Katniss and warned her about a danger right above her. There was a wasp nest which Katniss knows is very dangerous and could be very bad for her. Katniss later uses the nest as a weapon and keeps herself safe but would have been in deep danger if Rue did not warm her.

Rue was very young and sneaky and was able to be able to go unnoticed in the games. Even though her position was bad and Rue could have just escaped, she decided to stay and warn Katniss about the nest which was really important for Katniss. This shows not only how agile and quiet Rue is but more importantly shows her amazing character and kindness, which ends up aiding Katniss very much. Without Rue's warning, Katniss could have not only had one less weapon to use but could have been a true victim of the nest herself. We learned that the tracker jackets were very dangerous after Katniss was stung and I realized that if she had been stung just a couple times more, she probably would have died for sure.

His whole body starts sparkling as if he's been dipped in dew. 'Are you mad?' He's prodding me with the shaft of the spear now. 'Get up! Get up!' I rise, but he's still pushing at me. What? What is going on? He shoves me away from him hard. 'Run!' he screams. 'Run!'"(193)

Katniss used the nest as a weapon and successfully drove out the tributes for a bit and was attempting to get the bow from Glimmer's dead body before the Capitol took her back away. Then soon the careers and Peeta start to come back and Peeta is the first to come back and as he sees that Katniss is still there, he yells at her to run knowing that the other careers are following close behind. He ends up saving her life from Cato and helped her escape in time.

Katniss realizes that Peeta probably joined the careers to survive and has been pretending to hunt Katniss when all along he wanted to make sure she was safe. Katniss realizes that Peeta just saved her life and that Peeta has been trying to protect Katniss the entire time. This shows how much Peeta also cared for Katniss and shows that he was always on her side and wanted her to survive. Could the cannon shot announcing her death have come in the wee hours when even my good ear was too broken to pick it up? Will she appear in the sky tonight? No, I refuse to believe it. There could be a hundred other explanations. She could have lost her way. Run into a pack of predators or another tribute, like Thresh, and had to hide. Whatever happened, I'm almost certain she's stuck somewhere between the second fire and the unlit one at my feet. Something is keeping her up a tree."(231)

After her plan with Rue, Katniss is now on the search for where Rue might be after she didn't return to the rendezvous point. She begins to become very nervous and starts to worry if Rue is safe, if she is dead, if she is trapped and Katniss begins to think that it may just be something that has just caused Rue to hide or escape for a bit.

We see that even though Katniss is worrying about her allies whereabouts again, she begins to calm herself back down. Before Katniss was always spiraling and continually worrying about her ally, before being Peeta, but now we see that she has grown more as a tribute and is taking a more explanational approach and is being more mature. She is more calm and thinks about how Rue is probably okay and ensures herself it will be okay and shows how she has grown mentally during the games.

That the full value of their gift has been recognized."(239)

After Rue's death, Katniss is devastated but receives a sponsor gift and she wonders why now. She opens it to realize that the gift was bread from District 11, Rue's district, and is very thankful and understanding how expensive this gift must have been. She knows that the gift was as a thank you or as a repay of debt and wants the District to know that she is aware of the value in the gift they gave her.

Katniss is devastated by Rue's loss and beautifully takes care of her to honor her name. District 11 saw this and gave her a gift in commemoration of what Katniss did for Rue. Both district 11 and Rue were very important to Katniss, Rue helping with Katniss's plan and District 11 providing her food and showing their thanks. Districts have never given sponsor gifts to people not in their district so Katniss getting one shows how important what she did for Rue was.

"There's no question, it's sleep syrup. It's a common medicine in District 12. Cheap, as medicine goes, but very addictive. Almost everyone's had a dose at one time or another. We have some in a bottle at home. My mother gives it to hysterical patients to knock them out or stitch up a bad wound or quiet their minds or just help someone in pain get through the night. It only takes a little. A vial this size could knock Peeta out for a full day, but what good is that? I'm so furious I'm about to throw Haymitch's last offering into the stream when it hits me. A full day? That's more than I need"(276-277)

There is a feast announced where the tributes can get a bag full of everything that they need or the one thing that they really need, in Katniss's and Peeta's case, medicine for Peeta's leg. Katniss really needs to go but Peeta would not let her and she doesn't know what to do when Haymitch sends a sponsor gift. She is confused and mad at why he would give her sleep syrup when she then realizes that with the sleep syrup she could make Peeta sleep and get the bag.

Haymitch has been communicating with Katniss via gifts the entire game and helping her a lot. Katniss is confused about why he would give her this gift and is mad but realizes its true purpose. She realizes that with this she can get the medicine to save Peeta and realizes how important this gift was. Throughout the entire game, Haymitch has been giving very smart and calculated gifts and has been the most important part in Katniss making it so far. Haymitch has always been hoping that Katniss would thrive and his gifts are helping her so much and giving her a greater chance at winning.

"In the remaining hours before nightfall, I gather rocks and do my best to camouflage the opening of the cave. It's a slow and arduous process, but after a lot of sweating and shifting things around, I'm pretty pleased with my work. The cave now appears to be part of a larger pile of rocks, like so many in the vicinity. I can still crawl in to Peeta through a small opening, but it's undetectable from the outside. That's good, because I'll need to share the sleeping bag again tonight. Also, if I don't make it back from the feast, Peeta will be hidden but not entirely imprisoned. Although I doubt he can hang on much longer without medicine. If I die at the feast, District 12 isn't likely to have a victor."(278)

After using the sleep syrup the Haymitch gave her, Katniss prepared to go to the feast in hopes of getting the medicine to save Peeta. She made sure he would be safe, that he was well protected, and that he was camouflaged well. She knew that she might not make it our alive from the feast and was well aware of the dangers but decided to go anyways because she needed to save Peeta.

Katniss could have just left Peeta and kept herself alive and try to win the games like that because Peeta was a nuisance unhealed, but instead she decided to risk her life and go into a situation that was apparently dangerous in hopes that she could save Peeta. This shows her unwavering care and empathy for Peeta and shows the crazy bravery she had to go to the feast and risk it all. Additionally, she made sure to keep Peeta well protected and decided to camouflage his location when she could have been resting in preparation instead.
