The chart below shows the amount spent on six consumer goods in four European countries. And there are a few differences among these countries.

First of all, it is clear that British spent nearly 170 thousand pounds on the Photographic film, and far more than other countries. The second is French people who spent more than 165 thousand pounds. British also spent 165 thousand pounds for toys and CDs, which are higher than other four nations. But for Tennis racquets, British are the same as Italy and more than other two counties.

In addition, we can notice distinctively that Italians spent over 155 thousand pounds for Toys which are more than other consumer goods, and we can conclude that for Personal stereos, four countries are all slow down slightly and Germans are the least one.

Furthermore, Germans spent 145 thousand pounds approximately for both Toys and CDs, besides, it is also the least among four countries. It is also easily to find that Britain is the highest country for six consumer goods while Germany is the least one in total.

Firstly, you should know that the IELTS writing test marking scheme is divided into four parts:

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Task Achievement

Lexical Resource

Coherence and Cohesion

Therefore, grammar accounts for 25% of the marks in your writing test.

You are assessed on two things:

Your ability to produce grammatically accurate sentences;

Your ability to use a wide range of grammar structures.

In IELTS writing task 1 you may have to describe trends. This may come up in a line graph, bar chart or when comparing more than one chart. There are two main grammatical structures we can use to describe trends.
There + be + adj. + noun + in + noun phrase

Example:

There was a gradual rise in the price of oil.

There has been a sharp drop in the price of oil.

Possible adjectives

gradual

moderate

modest

sharp

dramatic

slight

steep

steady

significant

considerable

rapid

Possible nouns:

decline

variation

decrease

dip

drop

fall

peak

fluctuation

growth

increase

rise

slump

Noun phrase + verb + adverb

Example:

The price of oil rose gradually.

The price of oil has risen dramatically.

Possible verbs:

rise

jump

grow

climb

increase

rocket

fall

drop

decline

decrease

go down

plummet

plunge

Possible adverbs:

gradually

moderately

modestly

sharply

dramatically

slightly

steeply

steadily

significantly

considerably

rapidly

slowly

Describing Increases and Decreases

When describing any of the charts in IELTS writing task 1, you might have to describe increases and decreases. There are three main ways you can describe increases and decreases.
Noun phrase + verb + adverb

Example:

The price of property fell sharply

The percentage of homes dropped dramatically.
There + be + noun + in + noun phrase

Example:

There was a fall in literacy levels.

There has been an increase in the cost of coffee.

Using fractions

Example:

The price of oil halved in less than a year.

The price of oil has halved since July.

By July, the price of oil has halved.

Making Comparisons

IELTS writing task 1 will often require you to make comparisons between data sources, groups and times. Here are five grammatical structures you can use to make comparisons.

More/few/less + noun + than

Example:
Overall, more people preferred public transport than taxis.

of one syllable -er + than

Example:

A higher number of people preferred public transport than taxis.

More/less + adj. of more than one syllable + than

Example:

Taxis were more popular than public transport.

of one syllable -est.

Example:

The highest % of commuters preferred taxis.

The most/least + adj. of more than one syllable.

Example:

The least popular mode of transport was buses.

Summarising

IELTS writing task 1 is essentially a summarising task. Your overview paragraph should contain two or three sentences summarising the main features of the graph. In order to help you do this, here are some short phrases.

To summarise, the most marked change is….

Overall, it is clear….

Overall, the majority/minority….

In sum, the most noticeable trend is….

Don’t say ‘to conclude’. This is only for discursive essays.

Tenses

Using the appropriate tenses in IELTS writing task 1 is essential if you want to get a high band score.

The key is to look at the title of the chart and the information contained on both axes to establish what time frame is used. This will help you establish what tense you should use.

Example:

If the time is one point in the past, for example January 1990, then we should use the past tense.

If it has projections for the future, for example 2045, we use future tenses.

It there is no time, we use present simple.

Below are a range of tenses that could be used in task 1. Remember, the tense you use will depend on the information displayed in the graph. This is not a complete list of tenses and an awareness of all the English tenses will help you achieve the IELTS score you need.

Present Perfect:

We use this tense generally to talk about an action that happened at an unspecified time before now. The exact time period is not important.

In writing task 1, we use this tense to talk about changes in data that have happened over a period of time.

Example

The price of oil has fallen by $5 a barrel every week since July.

Present Perfect Continuous

We use this tense to show that something started in the past and has continued up until now.

Example

Oil prices have been decreasing since July.

Future Perfect

We use this tense to state that something will be finished by a particular time in the future.

We often use it with ‘by’ or ‘in’.

Example

The price of oil will have reached $300 a barrel by 2020.

Past Simple

Use this tense to talk about an action that started and finished at a specific time in the past.

Example

The price of oil fell from $150 in Jan 2014 to $50 in Jan 2015.

Approximations, Percentages and Fractions

In many of the IELTS writing task 1 questions, you will have to deal with percentages. This is a good opportunity to express these percentages in a different way and boost your score. A way of varying this language is to express them as fractions or proportions.

Remember that you should vary your language as much as possible in order to score high in the ‘lexical resource’ part of the test.

For instance, use approximations. E.g. 49% can be expressed as “nearly a half”.

Below are a range of expressions that can be used to express percentages.

Fractions

73%- nearly three quarters

51%- just over a half

49%- just under a half

32%- nearly a third

3%- a tiny fraction

50%- exactly a half

26%- roughly one quarter

49%- around a half

24%- almost a quarter

77%- approximately three quarters

Proportions

70%- a large proportion

71%- a significant majority

15% a small minority

3%- an insignificant minority

Source: https://www.ieltsadvantage.com/2015/03/10/ielts-writing-task-1-grammar-guide/

The housing terrain in the west north of the village has been expanded and it's for this reason that more houses have been built. In addition, the hotel has constructed its own car park.

The maps depict significant changes which have taken place in the village of Ryemouth between 1995 and the present day.
Overall, the diagram reveals several significant reconstructions of the village by replacing old or not useful building with new housing and the transformation of landscape. First of all, two more houses have been added in both sides on the main road in the north-west side of the village. In addition to this, a couple new houses have been built in the one side of newly expanded road in the west. In the north-East nowadays, one can be find golf and tennis courts which used to be farmland and forest park in 1995. New transformation has also taken place in the shops and fish market in 1995. These days the shops have been changed into restaurants complex and fish market replaced by new apartments in the seaside. In 1995, fishing port used for different marine purposes ,whereas nowadays there is no port which has been demolished. However, some objects have a negligible changes or no changes at all. In the East-south of the map, there are insignificant changes in hotel infrastructure such as creation a car park also there is no alteration in cafe can be seen.

Describing maps
The two given maps reveal the variety of changes which have been made to the city of Mumbai from 1845 to today. Overall, even though some islands or place names remain, the main transformation was that the seven separate islands were merged into one large island.
Looking at the map of Mumbai now, we can see there are many amenities which have been built since 1845. It is obvious that many railway lines and major roads which run through the city center have been constructed in order to connect between facilities and the residential areas. Particularly, four hospitals, two hotels and a church have been constructed throughout city.
Before 1845, Mumbai’s territory was divided into seven islands which were a rural area with no connection or bridges. However, the same island’s names are still the same today even its location still remain. For example, Coloba is located in the south part of the city whereas Worli and Parel are located in the north part of Mumbai.

The line graph illustrates the total amount of time spent on telephone calls in the UK from 1995 to 2002. Overall, it can be seen that the total time in 1999 was far higher than others throughout the entire period.
To begin with, the figures in 1998 and 1999 showed a fairly similar trend. However, In 1995, the total time on local calls was nearly 70 billion minutes, and then it has risen gradually to 90 billion minutes in 1999, after that it declined steadily to 70 billion again in 2002. Interestingly, National and international calls soared until 2000, after which it flattened out over the rest of period. Furthermore, national and international calls rose steadily from below 40 billion minutes in 1995 to a peak of just over 60 billion in 2002.

The maps depict the remarkable changes that have been taken place in the town of Denham between 1986 and the present time. Generally, the most changes happened to the main street and its two sides.
In 1986, it can be seen that Danham had two extended pirces of farmland, but these days in those areas have become desolate. In 1986, near the primary school used to be a house with a big garden, but this has turned into a retirement facility with no gardens. Moreover, there used to be several stores but now there are no more stores, only the post office still remains the same as before. Additionally, the bridge to cross the long river Stoke has also remained. Another noticebale change is that the town has a primary school, the houses and the post offices. All of these facilities have expanded in the area.
To sum up, it is clear that the Danham has had several major changes to the main street across the town from the north to the south, on two sides of the street. There are no changes for post office and bridge.

Some people believe that living with parents has more benefits than living alone, in particular in the pandemic like Covid 19. However, some other people disagree with this statement because they think that living alone gives people more freedom and happiness. In this essay, I will present both advantages and disadvantages of living with family together.
It is undeniable that being together with family gives people more opportunities and chances to share things. For example, people can sharing house chores, paying bills and responsibilities and saving money. This point is very useful for young people who are studying or not working ful time they can receive support from family. Furhtermore, People who live with their parents might feel safer because there are always someone behind them to take care of anything like unexpected situation or curcumstance. You can make mistakes but can also get support and guidance from older members to avoid mistakes again in future.
On the other hand, others people believe that, living alone allows people to become more independent and free. This maybe true because young people need to learn how to survive and deal with problems by themselves in the real world. In addition, when they grow up, some of them need to make brave decisions such as to move to a new city or country for study and work, they can not depend on their family always.
In summary, it can be believed that living with parents have a lot of advantages, however, people who have to live alone can have the same opportunities. So the solution should be own decision for each of individual to decide what is better for their situation.
