I found both the videos presented in this first section of the second module, very comforting. I could see that the problems and the classroom behavior of my suburban students in Rome are identical to those of a Dutch school (architecturally beautiful compared to mine, at least for the maintenance and cleaning perfect) Dutch. The outreach work among the younger generations is hard: every time I found myself arguing in the classroom such as after events related to recent attacks ISIS in France, England, Russia, I found very difficult to break down the wall of distrust and injury. The context works against: family, politics, the economy in crisis, society. I hope to still be able to develop new teaching strategies to try to counter this.

This is not of concern, but of legality: more and more often in our schools (I am referring more specifically to the Italian context) there is attention and alarmist exaggeration by families who contest initiatives that go beyond the entrenched habits. From there it triggers an action of pressure that comes from above, they are only intended for the countless inconveniences and dangers that introduce 'foreign' people at school context may result. The associations involved in helping migrants often work in 'shadow' or prefer to work parallellamente literacy of migrants, seeing the school status as a competitor. In fact, I think the role of such associations could first of all be to mediate the relationship with the school and the children that attend instead of just doing an action of public all'istitutzione replacement. On the other hand, however, it would take even more foresight and initiative on the part of school authorities, but this is another chapter of the matter ...

What intrigues more when you visit a foreign country, especially relating to a very different culture, are the customs, traditions, way of fun, music, art. All items typically find great success in young people: you could start from this, compare, create parallels between the interests of young people in the host countries and those of young migrants. You may discover a lot of contact points, and so much to share but also learn a lot of what is unknown to us and that is part of a culture, civilization. Perhaps you would find that we are more alike than you might think ...

I think we must approach this subject with students in a 'multimedial' way or by making use of different tools: guided discussions, the proposition of direct evidences, works of collaborative and cooperative learning, dramatization. The approach to work on several fronts is more able to involve a greater number of boys. As also pointed out in the first of three courses devoted to this theme, the fundamental feeling that we must raise is empathy, without this it will be difficult to achieve the purpose. In a world like ours, where consumerism and materialism permeate the lives of every day to understand what life is like without ease and immediate needs it is not easy. Abseiling in the shoes of a refugee or migrant may be an insurmountable goal for those who then has a curtain of prejudices to break down.

I found very interesting metaphor construction of the lintel system to explain what are the pillars on which rests the concept of cultural identity. But perhaps it’s not enough. The action will be more integrated longer be effective. The contribution of mediators, psychologists, sociologists, historians is desirable and necessary. In the second measure, the proposition of working in a team for a common goal can be useful to facilitate a first communication between students of different origin. The sport, the realization of a project, a social service experience are just some of the activities that are useful to trigger the cohesion and empathy. Sharing is important both theoretically (values, principles, rules) and operational (projects, accomplishments, goals).
