An Attempted 365-Day Quote Challenge

When I was in 5th grade, I set myself the challenge of coming up with a quote every day for a year based on each day's experiences.

I'm not sure how 11-year-old me got the idea to attempt such an ambitious task, but somehow, I managed to make it to Day 218.

I love reminiscing upon all the memories and somewhat cheesy quotes. Here are some of my favourites:

Day 30: "One must be curious before they are wise"

Day 129: " If you want people to listen with their hearts, you gotta speak with your heart"

Day 152: "When your mood is backwards, it can become your doom"

Day 184: "For every step we take in life, the path gets 1 step longer"

This challenge inspired me to keep experimenting with journaling, and journaling continues to help me appreciate and learn from little moments.

- Amanda :)

Relearning

Recently I found a long forgotten notebook in my room. Flipping through the pages, the words seemed to speak to me both with a foreign tongue but also with a hint of familiarity, much like when you pick back up an abandoned instrument. I managed to relearn so much about my Grade 5 self when most of my childhood seemed to be lost and insignificant compared to current life stresses, and I sure am glad that I kept some sort of record of my experiences. Perhaps, because of this rediscovery, I will pull out a journal and start writing again.

I might be terrible at journaling.

I seldom take the time to sit down and reflect on things I’ve done or things I look forward to. On the odd occasion I feel compelled (usually by overwhelming emotions if I’m being honest) to put a little bit of myself down on paper, it usually comes out super duper ugly ☠️. I went through a couple of old entries recently and it was actually a really interesting experience. I was partly shocked by how painfully honest I was. Some of it was so bad it was humiliating, while some of it was so bad it was actually kinda funny. I found it most interesting to revisit myself by reading my old entries. I was reminded of my old personality, interests, strengths, weaknesses, desires, sense of humour, goals, self image, the person I used to be. I took pride in all the ways I saw myself grow and improve, but I also felt proud of the strengths I’ve always had but never took the time to acknowledge. Too often I reduce my past self to some naive hollow idiot, it’s nice to know that that was at most only partly true.

So even though everything I’ve written when reflecting about my life is hot trash, journaling is still a great outlet for my thoughts and it gave me the opportunity to reflect on my growth as an individual. I hope to journal more frequently in the future!!
