Disappointment

I put this photo for disappointment because it shows an empty fridge which is very disappointing. I also added it because in the book there was many tikes that they had empty fridges which caused them to feel very disappointed. The book shows many different types of disappointing examples. On Page 227 it states "He studied the sculpture, then suddenly reached over and smeared off Shakespeare's mouth with his thumb." This shows disappointment because Lori was ready with a sculpture she worked so hard on and when showing it to her family, her dad once again disappointed her by destroying it and ruining her chance of getting a scholarship.

Self Reliance

I chose this picture for self reliance because it shows somebody dumpster diving. In the book it talks about Brian and Jeannette dumpster diving at one point too, in order to find things they needed like food since they couldn't rely on their parents to get some for them. On Page 172 the book states "Brian and I became expert foragers. We picked crab apples and wild blackberries and pawpaws during the summer and fall, and we swiped ears of corn from Old Man Wilson's farm." This shows that they had to forage and scavenge for themselves. The scene right before this one talks about how they shared a whole canned ham for a whole week. This shows that it was very hard to rely on anybody but themselves to get food.

Broken Promises

I chose this picture for broken promise because in the book Jeannette says that she promises to take care of Maureen. Although she says that, Maureen still ends up in jail meanwhile Jeannette is living her life in New York. On page 46 of the book it states "She moved in confused, jerky motions, as if she couldn't understand why Mom's belly wasn't still around her. I promised her I'd always take care of her." This quote shows a broken promise because Maureen needed her older sister and instead Jeannette never helped her and always left Maureen alone and with the neighbors. When Maureen would struggle with her mental health Jeannette left to New York and completely left Maureen alone. Jeannette never made enough of an effort to help Maureen like she promised.

Poverty

I chose this picture because it shows a family moving into an old beat up home just like the walls family. This shows poverty as they could not afford a better house and therefore have to live in this house. On page 149 it states "Dad found us a house we could afford. It is a bit on the rustic side. How rustic Lori asks? Mom paused. I could see her debating how to phrase her answer. It doesn't have indoor plumbing." This shows that they were too broke to be able to afford a nice house. They couldn't even afford a working plumbing system in their house which shows how poor the house they bought was. Throughout the book they still talk about more cases of not being able to afford simple things like food and clothes

Selfishness

I chose this picture for selfishness because it shows a person being selfish. They aren't sharing something they have that can easily be shared with somebody else. On page 174 the book states "Brian yanked the covers back. Lying on the mattress next to Mom was one of those huge family-sized Hershey bars, the shiny silver wrapper pulled back and torn away. She'd already eaten half of it." This quote clearly shows a huge part of selfishness in the book. Rose Mary couldn't even bring herself to share a chocolate bar with the family and was therefore selfish with it. Although all the kids were hungry, as they hadn't eaten a consistent meal in a long time, their mom still thought of herself first.

Forgiveness

I chose this picture for parental neglect because it shows Jeannette and her mom sitting together. Even after everything that Rose Mary did that was bad Jeanette still loves and forgave her and even let her mom live in a house behind hers. On page 253 it states "But Lori had moved out of the South Bronx and into an apartment in the same building as Brian, and she let them come stay with her and Maureen." This shows forgiveness because no matter how bad their parents treated them, Lori still found it in her heart to forgive them and help them when they were in need of it. Another example of forgiveness is when Jeannette makes a house for Rose Mary and buys her many different things.
